Can hexmap symbols be placed on sub-grids?
Hi,
I am relatively new to CC3, but I have read documentation and been through a number of tutorial vids.
Like many people on these forums, I have a history of gaming, boardgames, RPG's and computer games. When it comes to RPG’s, I was especially into Traveler and 2300AD.
In those settings, icosahedral world maps are used, and submaps at different levels.
I have tried to figure out if one can have grids placed on different sheets and force hex symbols onto those sheets, so far with little luck. Which is why I post this question on the forum, to see if anyone has good suggestions on how to do this.
I enclose a CC3 file with one complete sub-hex map for at Traveler size 7 world.

I will try to help here, even though I know practically nothing about Traveller, and very little about hex grids in general.
At the moment your symbol scale and snap grid correspond with the largest grid, so that when you pick a symbol it appears like this, and snaps correctly to the large grid:
Do you mean that you want the symbols to be the size of one of the smaller grids, and snap with that smaller grid?
A little note here.
Usually the grids are on their own sheets, so as to be separate from the map and on top of it to be visible, and have their own sheet effects.
Yes, I would like the hex symbols to scale to the smaller grid:
Note that there is another sub-sub-level grid in the drawing, on its own sheet (Grid lvl3) which I rotated again to point up. My first goal is to be able to place the current symbols in that sheet correctly sized.
(a thanks very much for prompt reply :-) )
CC3+ looks for a hex grid on the HEX/SQUARE GRID layer. Only the grid on that layer will affect the scaling/rotation/snapping of the hex symbols, and if you have more than one grid on that layer, CC3+ will pick one of them (Probably the first it encounters in the internal drawing list)
What you need to do is a little manual manipulation. Make one layer for each of the hex grids, and place the one you actually want snapping to occur for on the HEX/SQUARE grid layer.
If you ever want to place hexes on the other grids, then you need to go do a little layer renaming, renaming the current HEX/SQUARE GRID to something else, and the other layer to HEX/SQUARE GRID.
Thanks!
I will try this, and hopefully succeed.
I have read a number of posts on hex-grids, hex-symbols and considerations whether to use ordinarily drawn entities with a hex-grid superimposed or draw maps with hex-symbols. In general I agree that the former probably is best suited for mapping, but placing hex-symbols to build a map has its own charm.
One thing I want to test is if it's possible in practice to make a hex-map with 1/100th sized hex-symbols on the icosahedral Cosmographer maps.
Thanks for all help!
