What Map Styles are "Best" for Various Sizes?

How do you determine what styles work best for world, continent, region, small region, etc?
Is there a way to create an easy list of the annuals to categorize them into their suitability?

Level of Detail, or LoD.
You can use any overland style for a world map, as long as you understand that you might have to use the symbols rather large so they are recognisable for what they are. There are some overland styles that are specifically designed for world maps. These tend to be the ones that you instinctively wouldn't use for a local area map because the symbols look too simplified at that scale.
But this is only a rule of thumb.
As for categorising all the styles - that would be highly individual and according to taste.
