Can't Export this to JPEG
Calibre
🖼️ 39 images Mapmaker
Hey all, trying to export this map to JPG/JPEG and when doing so, the program assigns .BMP to the file type. So, BleakmoorJPG.BMP
I'm quite careful picking the proper export option--always rectangular jpg etc.
What have I done to this map? LOL
thanks
Cal
PS: upon rendering, CC3+ shuts itself down. Is the file corrupted somehow? When I find the file, it warns me that the file has either been moved or deleted. A check of the properties shows 0 bytes.

It may be your export settings.
The size you want the bitmap to be may be under 10,000 x 10,000 pixels, but if you have used a lot of antialiasing the "work size" (bottom right of the Options dialog) may be much larger than that.
You might get away with this:
But it's unlikely you would get away with this:
Thanks Ms. Sue
Those options were the first I checked. Do you think I've corrupted the file somehow? Never had this happen before.
Oh, sorry: I have 0 anti-aliasing on any of my maps
Cal
Show me what your settings are and I will try to replicate the problem.
I've found CC3+ will crash (shuts down) without telling you why if you've set the export to a size your system (or the combined your + CC3+ system) can't handle. Occasionally, you might get an error box telling you something similar before this happens, but not always. Typically, I find setting the antialiasing to zero, or just turning it off, will solve the problem. However, it may be there's something else at work in this case too, of course.
Here we go...
I tested other FCWs after this bizarre issue and had no problems....
Ok, well it's just crashed on me too.
The next step is to find out if there is a particular sheet affecting it. I've noticed that despite not seeming to be overloaded like a large city map might be, the zoom and pan is quite slow.
I will try zoom and pan with each sheet hidden in turn till I work out which one(s) may be the problem, and try an export with those hidden.
ACK! what have I done?
So sorry, Ms. Sue.
Shouldn't I just delete it and start all over?
BTW, if you could please give me advice on the jungle trees, sure would appreciate it. I can't decide what looks 'better': mass of trees ala Ancient Realms, areas of trees ala Darklands or Spectrum, etc and so on. It's driving me mad!
😁

Sue, I think it may be something on the FOREST sheet. I tried a 1024 px export just now, and it hung for a while before rendering the export on that res. It did create the image, however.
Trying to hide everything but the FOREST sheet also had the program hang for almost a minute.
Well, for the forest (which is my problem) I used Ancient Realms (old version), then applied, lesee...well, I'll just show it so everyone can see:
There is a mass of fractal entities on that sheet Cal, which is making things run VERY slowly overall, and it may be this which is causing you so much grief.
This is just from a very quick check through, however, and I'm sure Sue's assessment will be far more useful!
Hmmm,
Strangely every time I try to 'fract' it, it ignores me. I dislike 'cartoony' or edges lacking a similarity to nature. I'm gonna erase all of that.
...
Well, that seemed to help on the redraws lol.

I got it to export with everything visible after I used SIMPLIFY on the land, set to zero. That removes any duplicated nodes right on top of one another and neatly trims all those hundreds of nodes you don't need outside the map all in one go.
It's still very slow to pan and zoom, though not quite as bad as before using SIMPLIFY on the land.
Try using it on the forests, and anything else you have in the map that isn't a smooth poly.
Incidentally, you don't need to go through all the rigmarole of doing a rectangular section if you are exporting the whole map. Use Restrict to map border and export an ordinarly JPEG bitmap. The frame is on the MAP BORDER layer and works just fine.
Mind running me thru SIMPLIFY steps again, someone? I can't tell if it's working LOL.
Yes, yes, I rarely use it as you can see.😁

It's just a thought, but at this large-scale of map, you can use the straight drawing tool and get a nearly identical "natural" appearance, simply by clicking more nodes as you go along. Although this obviously creates more nodes, they'll end up as a mere fraction of what you'd get by always drawing using the fractal tools, which often add far too many nodes on their default settings. You'll also end up with a map that looks pretty well identical to this, but one that you'll have more control over in all manner of ways.
:)
Oh look at that! I bet Wyvern has beaten me to it while I was trying to work out how to make the paragraph numbering go right.
Yeah. Numbered instruction lists don't work if you add screen shots.
Thanks to both...I figured out it was self-executing.
As for drawing the forests, I think I'm going to try watabou style for the jungles. It's easier, looks good and I can always colorize it a bit.
Cal
Not a hope Sue! I can't create those segments of screenshots anything like so fast as you - and then get them to sit properly in the text here as you've done!
Glad things are sorted for you now at least, Cal!
Remy taught me how to do it. Press SHIFT+the windows key+S, and then pick your spot with the mouse.
(This is Win 11. Don't know if it works in Win 10)
Ooh, that's a bit fancy Sue! Now all I have to do is remember it for next time it might be useful!
(Even if, like 60% of Win users, I'm still on Win 10...)
When you use Blender, Affinity and a whole lot of other apps that all have an excessive number of shortcut keys, and then you add more on top of that, I have trouble remembering most of them, but this is the one I use most frequently these days.
(Even if, like 60% of Win users, I'm still on Win 10...)
Lucky you! I can't have my Start Bar at the top anymore the way I like it in Win 11.
Start bar on the top....what. That would drive me crazy.
I've always had it at the top - until Win 11.
I'm a little late (as usual).
CC3+ always generates a BMP file and then converts that BMP to other file types such as JPG and PNG. If CC3+ is crashing and you have a file size of 0, there is a good chance that the temporary BMP file was created, but then CC3+ stopped before it generated pixel data.
If FRX doesn't appear to be doing anything, it's probably because you've hit the limit on the maximum number of nodes that it can add. If SIMPLIFY doesn't appear to be doing anything, then it's probably already simplified the entity to the level requested (the distance it asks for should be the minimum distance between nodes in the entity).
As Sue suggested, using a value of 0 with SIMPLIFY is helpful in that it will eliminate only duplicate nodes. Using a small value such as 0.01 can reduce the number of nodes substantially for entities which have had FRX applied a bit too much, often without affecting visual quality. If you're willing to put in a few minutes I would recommend using SIMPLIFY with increasingly larger values (0.01, 0.1, 1.0, and so on) to see how much you can reduce the nodes without affecting the visual perception of the drawing.
Yep, this discussion has added several new items to the wish list.
I forgot about the temporary BMP files thing that jslayton mentions. It's worth checking in case that's still lurking where you tried to save the image, as it can, and should to save clutter and potential future problems, be deleted. It likely won't just have gone away on its own, even if the program crashed before appearing to do anything much, as I've had that happen before.
If the same export is done again successfully then the empty file should be overwritten and removed automatically. It shouldn't be necessary to do manual cleanup unless things persistently go wrong.
Yeah, problem is if the export fails, I usually go back and tweak whatever occurs to me before trying again, which commonly includes the filename I'm using to save the image!
