In response to a particular question about how the sky effect was achieved, it is an image uploaded to CC3 in Sheet: Trace with 30% transparency.
Since there were clouds in this image, I decided to add some new clouds to try to give more depth to the drawing.
The rest of the image was overlaid with icons and land features.
