Edge Fade on Corners > 180°

I'm using an overlay on my map to show regions using color code. Region borders follow a hex grid. I've applied an edge fade (10 units, 0% opacity, effect units = map units) and it gives the results I want, except when the internal border angle is greater than 180°. Seems the effect is being clipped, but doesn't always happen.

In the images attached (one with effect on, one with effects off) focusing on the purple region, the corners circled in green are applied correctly, but the corners in red circles have the effect clipped. The shape was created using multipoly from the east and west coastline, and two paths that define the northern and southern border.

Is there a way to address this?

Yes, the Edge Fade does have that problem.

You could use an Edge Fade, Inner instead, and turn the inner opacity to zero and the outer opacity to 100%

However, you would have to use several sheets, as the EFI effect only recognises the outer edge of all the polygons compined. In most maps this should be no more than 4 sheets, since you can put polygons that don't touch one another on the same sheet.

  • Thanks for the quick response and proposed workaround! I'm already using a couple of sheets for this to address adjacent polygons of the same color.
