Of large and small maps

Hello and good evening,
I have a conceptual question: how do I proceed if I want to create a large map and then take out various individual, small areas from it in order to draw the area more precisely?
Can I mark areas with all the mountains, trees, rivers and so on and then copy them into a new map?
How do you do that? Do you have any tips for me?

After several years of no one to talk to in making these maps, I discovered that it was easier to start large scale then make parts of thst map. Rather than vice versa.
