Trying to resize a map
I made a map a few years back and now I need to add some to the edges of the map. How do I resize it? I tried using the 'Resize Drawing Area' but that adds a new chunk to the map and the don't connect. Any suggestions?

If the map is older then it might be that the Resize doesn't work as expected. If you have a SCREEN sheet, hide it. By the description of chunks not connecting it sounds like the SCREEN hasn't resized and is now obliterating some of the map.
If it is the screen use the commands in this blog to sort it out - delete the screen object and make a new one.

If you are just adding extra area without changing the scale, then just redraw your map border. If you are also changing the scale, eg going from a scale of 1 unit = 5 km to 1 unit = 10 km, then that is a different matter, and you need to read the article Monsen wrote on it

That seemed to work but now I still have a black box around the original map. How do I get rid of that or enlarge it to encompass the new 'larger' map?

Redraw your map border to add area without changing size.
@Xargun - Tiffani is right. It looks like the frame is also not responding to the Resize, but at least you know what's happening this time. To redraw the frame first use the Extract Properties tool on the existing one. This will set up the correct sheet, layer, line width and so on in the Status Bar at the top of the map, so that you can use the Rectangle tool on the right hand toolbar and draw yourself a new one. Switching on the snap grid will help with the positioning.
While I wasn't able to put a new black box around the newly sized map I did delete the current one. Thank you all for your help.

Now that I can resize the map I am thinking I need to do my whole map now which means moving the current map from its location to a more central location in the map. I tried to copy it but it doesn't seem to be copying all the layers - its not copying the coastline and such only the stuff on top. I am not very good at this application but how can I copy the entire map and either move it or plop it into a newly resized map so I can draw my entire continent?

Make sure no layer is frozen. Otherwise copy won't do anything.

As far as moving the map is concerned that's relatively straightforward, and it sounds like you've already sorted it out for yourself. Use the Move tool and select everything by drawing a box selection just inside the extent of the background, hit D on your keyboard for Do It, and move it all at the same time to a new position.
If you are moving the land as well as all the details you will have to extend your coastlines once you've moved everything, but you can do that using the same land drawing tool that you used to create the landmass in the first place. Pick the tool and hit E for edit, then follow the instructions in the command line.
If you want to copy and paste between this map and a new and larger map, create the new map first with the desired hieght and width and then save it. Go back to your original map and use Copy in the Edit menu (or CTRL+C) and follow the instructions in the command line. Then open the new map and use Paste in the Edit menu (or CTRL+V). Once you have pasted the copied content hit ESC to get rid of the copy on your crosshairs or you will end up with multiple pastings.
And if the origin, 0,0, seems to be off.
type origin
and then click the lower left corner of your new map. That is now the zero, zero origin point.
