I use Astronomy Picture of the Day for backgrounds. Check them to make sure you are using copyright free images from there.

Nasa has its own images that you can search. These are just from NASA, and as a US Government agency, cannot claim copyright of the images. The Astronomy Picture of the Day sometimes includes people that have copyrighted the image, but if you just get an image from Hubble, it is free to use.

When I'm not so busy I will have a look at making a small set of backgrounds, maybe as an annual issue, though it would have to be impressive enough to become that.

I have some in my gallery; gurps space and expanse.

But they are a bit too busy. A scattering of stars of different colors; a small nebula or two; some small, under 30 stars, clusters would be good.
