This is a work in progress. I will change the colour of the islands - but it has a number that is easy to remember (8). What else do you suggest?

As for suggestions....
It's a bit difficult at this early stage. I guess you will be adding at least one mountain chain to each island unless any of them are intentionally flat all over. The actual suggestion is to finish doing that before you do anything else so that it's done and you can get a better feel for the next bit - whatever you decide to do next. Some people do terrain next and then settlements, and some do it the other way around. My preference is for terrain first, since the mountains and the terrain deeply affect the location of settlements.
it was a reflection on the small chain of 'islands' that gave me the idea for the name, @Loopysue, although you've missed Katisland! :D That will stand out better when I change the colour of the islands.

I am not sold onthe text colour, and also i think where possible, keep the test off the actual island mass. But I like the style.
The land masses look fine. I do not like the orange color of the text, nor the font. I agree with Quenten that island names should not be on the land mass.
I like the blue outline for the Haunted Lands. I don't think it goes well with the text color though. Maybe go with black. If not, then change the outer glow from blue to black and reduce the outline area/blur.
You might be better off working on the landmasses first by adding in different terrains and then return to labeling. That way you can see how all the colors look with the text.
Outer glow can handle that rather well.

When you wrote change the color of the islands, I thought you meant the landmass not the text.
I saw the orange text is temporary. But for me, I am ok with it as it stands out against the light blue of the water. But maybe a little too severe? A white outer glow would soften it up. I agree the text should not be on the islands. What mostly throws me off, I can't get a proper idea of the scale. One of your comments was that it was a small island chain. But on Dread Island, the two chasms/gaps along with the amount of the indicated hills/mountains makes me think it is much larger than a small island.

Now my text is vanishing as soon as I place it! I know I'm placing it correctly, on the TEXT layer, but its nowhere to be seen. I’ve looked on each layer (not that it should be needed).

@HelenAA Sorry, I thought you meant the island masses, not the island text. Sorry for misunderstanding
You need to check the sheets and not the layers. Also, make sure that the text sheet is towards the bottom of the list of sheets. It might be that there is another sheet on top of it. It could also be an effect on the sheet, but that is less likely.
Bit brain dead - are you meaning the list of sheets @Loopysue ? I'm turning everything of til tomorrow morning so I wont see your reply til then.
Yes that's right. It may just be a simple case of the TEXT sheet being too high up the list, or hidden.

All text sheets are together towards the end of the list but I can't get it to attach to this - may have to add to the next one @Loopysue .
It certainly looks like it should be visible.
Can you see the text on your cursor just before you place it? The only other thing I can think is that the text is there but incredibly small. If you think that might be the problem check the size of the font in Text Properties. Sometimes, and for reasons I'm not sure I understand, the text can start off really tiny.
I've <stage whisper> found a workaround, if a frustrating one </whisper>. Problem is that I don't know when it is going to work and when it isn't!
Map is very close to completion, only 1.5 islands to go!
