Despite my best efforts, I CANNOT go back to main view from expanded view of symbol categories
I righ-clicked one of the categories, then clicked "more", I believe, and now I'm stuck. Your help appreciated.

Right click again.
Or pick a symbol from the window. You can always hit the ESC key on your keyboard to abort placing a symbol.
I do agree from a user experience stand point that every action should have an immediately visible way to stop or cancel it. And "immediately visible" is the key to the user experience.
I still can't remember to right-click on icon buttons even after all of these years because there's not any visible cue that right-clicking on the button would do anything. I'd much rather have a little triangle in the corner of any button with an extra menu and have the menu appear in response to press-and-hold, but that's not how it was designed...
