Imported PNGs to Existing Symbol Catalog in New Style - Can't see them

Hello, all -

I have been testing the process for creating a new style using existing assets following the Creating a New Style blog. https://rpgmaps.profantasy.com/tag/create-new-style/

I created an iteration of 13th Age called 13th Age Expanded as part of this process and followed the directions, and did a test import of the recent annual Darklands' symbols, but they do not display when I finish the import process.

I must be missing something obvious.

Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance for your guidance,

Tom

P.S. My ultimate goal is to create three hybrid styles based on 13th Age, Erdan, and Spectrum using assets from Spectrum, Herman Wielink, Scorching Sun, and Darklands.

When you say they don't show, do you mean they don't show up in the Symbol Manager, or something else?

If you have symbols from different folders that have the same name (eg Tree 01, Tree 02, etc.) you will need to rename one or the other of the duplicate-named symbols in the symbol manager (not the originals folder).

They are visible as far as I can tell in the Symbol Manager. So when I save the Wizard file and start a new file to test this out, they aren't visible to select in the attached panel.

    Thank you,

    Tom

Do you save them as a symbol catalogue? That is necessary to be able to open them in the main catalogue window, rather than just having them in the map in the symbols in map side of the panel.

  • @Loopysue - Hmm. I didn't think of that. I copied and pasted cartouches from Darklands to my 13th Age Expanded symbols' folder Cartouches, then in the import panel selected that folder as my import folder. My thought was I'd be modifying a catalog that I already have, but maybe my logic is off? I did see the Save button after import, but it was greyed out.

Thanks so much for untangling this for me.

I would make your own brand new symbol catalogue. You can't undo it if you save over the top of an installed one ;)

Well, you can undo it, but you would need to reinstall at least some of your app or add ons.

@Loopysue - Hmm. Sounds like my logic was off. Thanks for talking this through with me.

    That's ok - youre welcome :)

I just hope I am thinking fast and well enough to keep up on this sleepy Sunday afternoon.

But I am sure that other people will join in if I make a mistake.

DON'T do that. It's going to cause you all sorts of headaches in the future. Since the path to the images are embedded in the map, it means that the map file won't work for anyone else not having the images copied to the right place, including on your own other/new computers. Leave official artwork in the folders they were installed in, and import them from there. Only make your own copies if you are going to actually modify the .png files on disk themselves, in which case you obviously need a personal copy.

    @Loopysue - I think I'm learning. I'm doing a lot better than the last time I tried doing CC3.

I was an aerospace engineer in my early career and know some CAD. When I learn new things I sometimes try running before I'm fully walking. Not always a good choice.

Anyway, I appreciate your help and this community.

    Thank you!

@Monsen - Oh, yeah. I see what you mean. Makes a lot of sense. I'll start this over and do it per your and Sue's suggestions.

I think I'm learning, but I know enough to be dangerous, and I emphasize dangerous.

    Thank you!
