Looking for advice, multi level lighting.

Initially I started this intending it to be a one page dungeon. A holding facility for a gelatinous cube and similar creatures. I strayed from that a bit and started playing with creating the illusion of depth and height and split levels.
Which brings me to another idea.
Using dungeon lighting effectively has always been a mysterious high magic to me. I've read the tutorials and I understand the basics. I've created some maps using it, a bit awkwardly.
What I want to do is split level the lighting to make some areas dim or dark while other places are brightly lit. I would be grateful for any advice and instruction.

The easiest way to make an area look a bit darker without messing with the lighting system is to simply cover that area with a simple polygon with a "Solid 30" fill (or maybe an even darker variant, depending on your needs)
Thank you.
I've tried that method and have not been happy with the results.
If you want to do it with proper lighting it might be a good idea to watch this video:
It should at least dispel the mystery of lighting effects and hopefully enable you to get the effects you want.
