I have map a rather large map but want to save a portion of it as a battlemap and the rest as an area map so I basically want to cut one map into two and save them separately. How do you do this.

Save As and select rectangular png or bmp or jpg.
Upper corner to opposite lower corner.

@JimP has it. Toggle Snap to ensure you get the part you actually want; you may want to even set up a border around the area to this end.
If I am going to import the map part into another template to use as a giuide. I make a hollow square on the area. Use Info menu -> distance. Then add the distance in text for both horizontal and vertical measurements.
