WIP city first attempt

Hey, pretty new to all this and trying my first city map. Got the first district finished but imo it looks a little unrefined. Constructive criticism is very welcome!

Looks good. The main thing that seems to be missing are effects. Especially the piers look very flat on the water without some kind of shadows and/or glows or bevels to help elevate them a bit.

It's a good start, and yes - effects would make everything pop :)

  • Thanks, I will give these things a try.

  • Well I gotta say, enabling even the default effects make it so much nicer that it feels like cheating. Had to fiddle with it a bit to get the docks working but I'm actually mostly satisfied with the look now. Thanks a bunch for the tips, though if you see something else that could be improved, don't hesitate to say. I'll be sure to post the whole thing once it's finished.

  • Perhaps a few chimneys or upper storeys or other enhancements eg dormers, awnings and wings. See pic below

I particularly like the way you have your houses touching - as they would in most medieval cities. I am not sure about the monochrome look, by that is a matter of taste.

The layout is a bit too geometrical, and there are no extramural dwellings (yet).

But a really good first city - mine was much worse than this.

  • I like the look of those little roof window things but I'm a bit hesitant to go too far into the building details. I have a habit of biting off far more than I can chew and this particular district takes up about 15% of the area within the city walls. I'll certainly try to make future roads a bit less grid-like when I've got more space.

Think you might be right about the buildings all being one colour though. I'll try switching that up and see what I prefer.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
