Advice on layers?

MstrCatMstrCat Newcomer

All,

I'm making a swamp map with a raised road, using the very very rough sketch below (I use such sketches to help me keep things in proportion and in relative position, working over the top of the sketch until I'm done).

I'm looking for advice on the best way to order the different layers. For a swamp, the layers I see are:

1) Wet lands

2) Dry lands (higher)

3) Wet vegetation (grasses, cat tails, water weeds, downed logs)

4) Open water

5) Road bed

6) bridges

7) Road surface

8) Shadows

9) Trees

What do you all think?

Thanks,

Bryan

Sounds like a nice structured way to go about things, though you may be worrying unnecessarily about the order before you have even begun. It's the sheets, not the layers by the way ;)

Most mapping styles are set up with sheets already in the right order for most drawings, and it only takes a couple of seconds to move them around if they aren't right for your particular map.

My best advice is to pick a style and import your scanned sketch and just to start working with the drawing tools and symbols - sort the order of the sheets later on if its not working for you.
