I'm sure it has something to do with the Symbol Manager, but I can't figure out exactly how. Any pointers appreciated!

Go to the symbol manager, select the symbol, and hit edit. Click the corner to form the drawing window.
Now, the symbols origin is the coordinate 0,0 in this new window.
To change the origin point, use View -> Move origin.
Of course, the symbols' origin point is also where it is held at the cursor when placing it.

After you start the Symbol Manager (Symbols → Symbol Manager) [
SYMMGR
] you need to
Edit
the symbol and use the
Origin
command (View → Move Origin).
