Büyük Saray - Isolated Desert City with Bazaar

I was asked to create this map by a friend who worked to create an entire desert / Asian culture for our D&D campaign. He sent me a rough sketch and this is what came out. I have thought about adding to the outside of the city, but I welcome any ideas there, as I do all suggestions or critiques. This map was created in the "CD3 Bitmap B" style.
In our storyline, Buyuk Saray is the capitol city of the Col İnsanlar people and home of the Great Emir and Grand Palace.

You could use a texturize effect on the Sand, using a wavy Bitmap to make it look more Lake a sandy dessert.
Maybe make the Sand with in the Walls a little darker than the Sand outside to make it seam more sheltered.
The gray stone beneath the palace looks a little out of place,you could put it on its own sheet and give it an edge fade or a bevel effect.
There cold be some Green and brushes along the steam ging through the city
Theschabi, I tried my best to implement your suggestions and it made a world of difference, especially under the palace. It gave it the depth it needed. Thank you. I'm still learning the texturize feature and don't quite have it down, yet.
