Text effects both on and off

Hi,

How can I have text effects on for some things and off for others? I did this before and can't figure it out for the life of me.

I typically have sheets effects on while working because I suffer no ill effects, and as soon as I draw a river name along a curve, and redraw, it gets the effects. I want it to never get them.

Thanks.

Probably the easiest ways to do that are to, either, deactivate the effects on the text sheet(s), or be sure to put your text on a sheet that has no effects assigned to it.

When you look at a sheet in the Drawing Sheets and Effects dialog box, any effects on the selected sheet are listed on the right. You can deselect (uncheck) the effects to turn them off, even when sheet effects are active.

Note that the selected sheet is the one highlighted in the sheet list. It is not necessarily the sheet with a checked checkbox. The checked sheet is currently active in the map but it is not necessarily the sheet you are working with in the dialog box.

    Hi Geminirand :)

You would need to add a new sheet called "TEXT River names" (any name starting with "TEXT" will do) and put the river text on it.
  • It I create text and change the layer to something else right before placing it, the text is indeed placed on a different layer, but when I redraw, it applies effects to the text anyway even though that layer has no effects on it.

I checked my other map where I was able to do this a hundred times and there's no additional custom layer that I added.

I've noticed that when I draw a curved line to draw text along a curve (that's how I'm doing this because I'm trying to add river names in small letters with no effects), the curved line also has the effects applied.
  • No sooner did I post that than I tried again and it worked. The only possible difference I can see is that the layer I'm doing it on is "Symbols and Trees" whereas I was trying it on "Screen" before.

    Thanks for the help.

The sheet effects are applied on the sheets, not the layers, so changing the layer would not have resolved the problem. Text defaults to the Text SHEET, which is why you have to create a new sheet called "TEXT[some additional name]" so that your river names don't just default back to the main TEXT sheet.
  • Sorry I was being sloppy in my writing. I was altering the sheet I was on, not the layer.

As I mentioned above, you don't have to create a new sheet. You can if you want, of course, but you can also just turn off the effects on your existing text sheet(s) by un-checking the effects that you don't want to apply. The nice thing about doing it this way is that, if you decide later to include the effects, it's a simple matter of just checking the boxes again.

That said, both techniques require that you place the text on the appropriate sheet(s). If you place the text on another, "non-text," sheet, any effects on the sheet will be applied to the text.
