I've noticed that myself. I think it is because rocks are nocturnal and can't grow in the light, they start growing once you cover them with your sleeping mat.

Your map is great, although I wiould have preferred seeing it stretch a bit more in the northern direction :)

You need to look harder.

And the palaces don't have fixed locations, therefore no hotspots.
