  • Changing road width

I recommend keeping the original drawing tool as it is and creating a copy of it for the new width.

Open the drawing tool dialog, and click the Advanced button so you get this view (below), and pick the road you want to modify.

Then click the New button under that list and give your new road drawing tool an appropriate name. In this example I want to create a new road just like the old one but 15 feet wide instead of 10 feet wide.

When you click OK you will find your new drawing tool in the list. The only thing you have to do now is change the properties so that it really is 15 feet wide rather than 10 feet wide. Do that by clicking the Properties button above the sample image.

That will open this dialog, where you can adjust the Width Fixed property to 15. OK this action, then save the new drawing tool and OK again to use it.

  • Live Mapping: Stairs and Steps

    Hi everyone :D

Tomorrow, Ralf will be going up and down the dungeon levels using the newly released May issue of this year's Cartographer's Annual - Stairs and Steps.

Come join in the discussion live on Youtube here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxrmBtt4zv4

Or watch it here on the forum (no live chat)

All our live mapping sessions are recorded if you miss the show, and can be found on Profantasy's Youtube channel.

  • What I've been working on

    Colours are always tricky.

If you are unsure about the colour of a fill relative to the rest of the map try using sheet effects to lighten/darken or change the hue, and go through a happy hour of hitting the Apply button until you are happy that the existing colour is the best one, or find a better one.

  • Info, Count All command.

I've not used the keyboard command myself, but you get a break down of everything if you pick 'Count All' in the Info menu.

Maybe that is what you did anyway, but there should be a list like this one.

  • WIP - Senan

You could try switching them off on a sheet by sheet level by unchecking the little box next to the effect - if you really need some of the effects but not all of them to be able to see what you are doing.

  • Expanding a Map

In the File menu you will find "Resize Drawing Area". This command will open a small dialog in which you can enter the new desired size of your map. When you hit OK the background, screen and map border should all stretch out to the new size, leaving your original map content anchored in the bottom left corner. If you want it placed centrally you will then have to carefully box select the contents of your map and move them to the new centre.

This command is very successful with newer styles, but since it is a new command it doesn't necessarily work that well with older styles, so it is as well to save a copy of your file before you try it.

If you have a resize error just shout again and we can guide you through the process of adding the relevant map note and making sure the screen, background and map border are all on the correct layers.

  • Chasm/Crevices in SS4 dungeon?

There are lots of ways to do this with sheet effects. This is just one of them.

You could add a Color Key sheet effect to the sheet you have your 'floor' level on and draw a magenta polygon (Colour 6) where you want the crack, then add a narrow Bevel, Lighted effect. You would have to uncheck the global sun direction in that effect and adjust the azimuth angle to be opposite the global sun azimuth (that usually means making it 135 instead of 315 degrees), but that should give you a crevice.

Then you would need to add a new sheet for your flooded level under that floor level so there is something to be seen through the hole you just ripped in the floor.

The reason the bevel would have to be narrow is to make it possible to hide the outside edges of that floor either beyond the extent of the map or under a wall. The bevel will be applied all around the edges, including the outside edge.

  • [WIP] Trying to design a barrel roof

A Blend Mode effect is similar to the blend modes used in PS or other bitmap apps to apply effects between their layers, only in this case it's between sheets. If you turn all the polygons mid-grey their shading will create a relatively smooth 'arch' without the fizzy appearance of any texture. You can then blend this to a nice simple rectangular polygon of a roof texture of your choice on an underlying sheet using a Blend Mode set to 100% opacity and Soft Light. Soft Light is a Blend Mode that will shade and highlight the underlying roof texture according to the shade and light of the roof arch.

  • Quoting an Old Post in a New Discussion

You can copy the relevant text and paste it into your new thread, then click the syntax mark to the left of the pasted paragraphs and set the style to be a quote.

Don't forget to add credit to the person who wrote it.

    ...

Or you could just hyperlink to the comment:

Go to the comment you want to quote, right click the time stamp under the name of the person who made it and copy the link. You can then paste it into your new comment and hit return. Providing the quoted comment isn't a mile long it should appear in a box.

  • SS5 and B&W Cities

It's been a while since I played with SS5, but I remember one way of turning the map to greyscale was to add an RGB Matrix Process to the Whole Drawing and pick the Gray preset for it.

The fact that the folder is called Color doesn't mean there is a black and white version.

Here is a shot of one of the example maps with the RGB Matrix Process added.

I've just noticed that you may have to change the shade of the glow on the text sheet to the palest grey to stop bits of the letters falling out when they are over black parts of the map.

Theoretically, you should be able to turn any style to greyscale using the same method, but I've not tried any of the others.
