  • Live Mapping: The Drawing Tools

This time around I intend to dig a bit deeper into CC3+'s drawing tools, and show how you can do all kind of fun stuff with them.

Who said drawing tools were just for drawing? (well... I guess I'll focus mostly on the drawing kind during the stream)

Stream will happen at Thursday March 10th, 1800 hours CET. (Click the video or see the forum sidebar to figure out the time in your time zone)

  • Handling spammers

Every online community have spammers visiting from time to time. Even if this forum do have anti-spam measures, there are nothing that can really prevent a user with a valid email address from registering and posting spam.

There are checks in place that will automatically reject applications from known bad sources, and blocking bots, and there are rate limits that prevents a user from filling the front page with spam easily, but every now and again, a single spam post is bound to appear.

So, the one important rule is that if you should encounter a spam post in the forum, do not interact with it in any way, except by reporting it by clicking the Flag icon in the post. Don't reply to the spam, don't send the spammer any PM's, and don't give the spam post any reactions (like, etc).

Replying to a spammers post actually help the spammer no matter what you write, since it brings the thread back into focus, showing it as unread again for everyone, dragging people back in for a second look. Also, any reply will remain behind when the spammers post are deleted, looking quite out of place.

Adding reactions will give the spammer points, which could lead to a higher rank, which is not at all desirable.

Note that one way many spammers operate is to first post a normal, but shallow post, either as an introduction, or a reply to something else. They do this to establish a presence as a regular user in the forum. They then either edit that post to put in spam content, which is why you may see even me replying to a spam post, because it wasn't a spam post at the time of my reply, or they start creating spam threads once they assume their account is old enough to bypass newbie filters. This is why this forum has a very limited post edit time for new users, and timers to prevent to frequent posting. I prefer to not ban people just on my gut feeling, so I usually let these shallow posts stand, even replying to them to judge their responses, and then monitor them to see what they do, so even if I post a welcome aboard post doesn't mean I don't have my suspicions. For these kinds of posts, feel free to do the same, but again, avoid giving them likes or or other reactions, save those for when they actually post something sensible, don't like them just because they claim they are new.

So, just don't take any action on these posts except flagging them. And should it be something particularly bad/illegal, you can also email me by using the email address in my profile or contact ProFantasy support.

  • Dungeon Level Symbols

Cute girl Kert. And a lovely boy you have there Quenten. Also quite a handsome little fellah there Maidhc.

Here's Jack in one of his typical postures, usually pushing the keyboard off the desk and into my lap, or using his tail to do some touch-typing or hitting the mouse buttons (cat tails are much more proficient at both typing and clicking that I could ever have imagined before I got a cat)

  • Live Mapping - Playing with Trains

In this session, I'll play with trains. We'll lock at creating the track, as well as create a nice railroad car suitable for a battlemap.

As usual, you can find the time in your local timezone in the left sidebar. Visit the stream over at YouTube to join in on the chat.

  • Jim Pierce 1947 - 2024

@Keighn sent me a link with his collection of Jim's Dwarf Home material.

I've uploaded the file to my own Webserver. It can either be downloaded as a complete .zip file (1.6 GB) from http://jimp.monsen.cc/DwarfHome/Crest%20of%20Star%20(Dwarf%20Home).zip or you can browse through the contents online and look at/download what you want at http://jimp.monsen.cc/DwarfHome (The folders there are just an unpacked version of the .zip)

    Thanks Keighn.

And note, if anyone wants a copy of the entire site, for example to set up a mirror or something interdependent of me, just ask. But be aware that it is about 7GB of files there now. And if anyone else has more material, I'll happily put it on my server to have everything collected in one place.

  • Ricko's Questions

To add on to Sue's answer, If you need several versions at different scales, you can clone a fill style definition by first picking the desired one to clone, then hitting the New button in the dialog, and give the clone a name. Now you have two versions of the same fill, which can be scaled independently. You can then make another drawing tool that uses the new version of the fill to have two drawing tools with the same fill at different scales.

  • Community Atlas 1000th Map Competition - The Winners

As it quite obvious, I am way behind in adding these to the atlas. Sorry for that, but I have had and still do have other things taking up my time as well.

But, I did manage to at least process the winning maps today (Except Lorelei, which need an intermediate map before I can add hers), and I assigned the badges to the winners.

  • Community Atlas Project - Download information - Contributions Welcome

So, I put together a video showing how I prepare atlas maps and discuss some of my tools. It is a bit on the longish side, but I suppose it could be interesting for some.

The sound is not perfect unfortunately, something up with my mic config. I'll get that sorted for my next video, but it is still fully watchable.

Note that the reason Sue's map was wrongly scaled here was that she though the city was in metric scale, which is quite understandable because it is actually started on a metric template, but the sizes of all buildings and symbols used are in imperial, something I hadn't noticed before the contest.

  • Scale things by size in units?

Not directly, it want a relative change.

But, you can get the desired result by just typing in the new size divided by the old size on the command line, as in, just type the actual calculation, no spaces. So if the old size is 3.7 units and you want it to be 2 units, when it asks for scale factor, just type

    2/3.7

on the command line when it asks for the scale factor.

You do need to know the old size though, which can be found using the distance tool in the info menu.

This is commonly used when inserting an existing map to trace by for example, just insert the image, measure the distance of the scale bar in the inserted image, and use that as the basis for scaling.
