  • A few quick maps for for playing in a Hunan-Inspired fantasy province

Here are a few maps I created for our RPG campaign in a China-inspired kingdom.

The area we played in was inspired by the sandstone pillars and mountains meet forests - landscape of the Wulinguan area.

I created them in relatively short time - which means that they lack a little polish. But having to find the right "style for the job" quickly got me into using some styles and effects I had previously ignored.

First: "The foggy forest", a map of the general area the group was travelling through. I used the CA106 "Ancient Rnealms" style, with a few symbols from Mike Schley's overland style.

Then "Strong Hedge", the village in the center of the map. It uses a briar hedge as the first line of defense against the wild animals / roaming monsters. My group actually chose to follow the small dotted path trough the forest, never setting foot near the village... but it's good to have a village map ready, just in case. ;)

This map was created using a mix of standard bitmap city map style and annual content.

  • Pirate Attack! A quick Battlemap

Made a quick battlemap for our ongoing Splittermond witch queen campaign.

The Pirate ship on top is using a water magic ritual to slow down the elven ship in the middle.

Our own ship is coming to the rescue at the bottom of the map. Looking forward to some ship-hopping and "anti ritual sniping".

Main style is CA172 Ship Deck Plans, with some elements from SS4 and Marine Dungeons.

A larger version is in my gallery.

And could we, eventually, please have a ship's wheel as SS4 downloadable content? I had to resort to using the shield symbol here... 🤗

  • Pirate Attack! A quick Battlemap

That would make sense in a navy, but this is poor costal pirates vs. poor costal traders so it'll most likely look like this:

    (Using Tokens from Forgotten Adventures):

The pirate captain is on the forecastle and the pirates are about to board. The ship's mage on the aft has 4 apprentices protecting him, but is busy with the maintaining the ritual that keeps the elven ship trapped.

PCs are not yet on this map, as they will have the opportunity to position themselves where they want (on the bottom ship) before the fight starts.

  • Slaughter Touwen - Just a small battlemap

Felt like doing an uncomplicated "old school" battlemap, for a change:

A larger version is in my gallery, as usual.

  • WIP - The Pink Lantern Quarter - A Kowloon Walled City Style Asian town map

Finally Finished house and Street placement. :-)

Took me a long while to finally start the central area hot / cold springs bath, but once started, it was surprisingly easy.

Now all that's left is (probaly lots of) polishing, the map key and title.

I've experimented with various frames, but so far I haven't found one that I like, so I'll most likely go without one.

A larger version is in the gallery.

  • Gioiella, a small Serpentine City map

Finally got my players into this magical lagoon city.

And as always, playing the setting adds more detail. :)

Added island names and a few features (the painted walls tell the history of the city - in cryptical and sometimes unsettling art. The large main channel is called "the flow/ river of life", because it runs between the temples of life and death - this is also the way, funeral processions go).

I've also created an in game map of the magical lagoon the city is set in. The outline is circular, since the whole area was magically transferred to the fae realm, when the city founders struck their first pact.

I'll either add it as a painting in the office of the high fool, or as a small magically painted glass window in the Temple of The Lucky Escape.

Used Realms of Legend as the main style, with a few bits from Here be Monsters and Waves from Schley Overland.

Larger versions are in my gallery.

    Have a great Sunday. :)

  • Al Shammar - Cities of Schley fortified oasis

    Here's the final update:

Added the following description text and submitted to @Monsen for The Atlas via email:

    Dekunu Oasis

This fortified oasis provides water and shelter to caravans between Zanesh and the coast.

The caravanserai on the eastern plateau has been expanded to a fortified outpost. It now includes a temple to the Sun Goddess, several traders and craftsmen, as well as tents for visiting desert shamans who still consider the oasis a holy place.

The former slave gnomes living on the western plateau have created their own enclave after having attained freedom.

In addition to regular shops and traders, the enclave includes its own well, an inn, a skilled healer, a potions and talisman shop and a temple to the gnomes' „god family“.

The gnome enclave is even more fortified than the eastern side, with quick release rope bridges connecting the buildings and „non visitor rooms“ having a very low ceiling, giving the gnomes an advantage in defending them.

  • The Harvest Moon Motel - a floorplan attempt

Wanted to try around with the "modern" floor plans a bit. This is based on a real motel floor plan that we once used for a World of Darkness Game.

Overall I'm not the biggest fan of the floor plan styles. They could use more symbols and some textures appear to be very low resolution. I ended up rescaling the indoor textures and using Darklands City and Creepy Crypts for some outdoor textures.

Will try creating a lighted night version next.

A larger version is in my gallery.

  • Lorenzino's Worlds of Wonders - A return to SS4

    Correct - and corrected.

Also slightly tweaked the shop's shadow, added some magic indoor lights for the shop room and created a manual shadow for the angel.

    Thanks Remy.

Update: Just noticed I had forgotten the shadows for three of the columns. Fixed this.

  • (WIP) Path to the Ruined Tower - A more realistic Forest Trails map

Attempting to create a more realistic Forest Trail map with this one.

    Things I've noticed so far:

    • Reducing the bright inner glow of the water to 50% brightness has helped the creek to blend in better.
    • The used City Cliffs do an "ok-ish" job with this style, but they stand out at higher zoom levels. Are there any relatively easy "Dungeon Scale" cliff solutions in other dungeon styles, that work with Forest Trails? EDIT: Silly me - Forget the WIP enhancement of this style. Looking forward to the new cliffs...
    • A forest created with leaves, weeds, ferns and Trees looks very good, but I'm missing broken-off twigs/ fallen branches. So far the only one's I've found are Mikey Schley ones - which don't fit in with this style. Are there any other ones I have missed?
    • The water looks really nice :-)

Some detail shots - at least the tower area is still WIP

Comments and suggestions for improvement are highly appreciated.
