Problem with Annual 126 (city generator)

When I install the annual and run cc3+ it tells me I need to install Net Framework 3.5 which fails when I try. Then it errors out on two files cc3actions.dll and cc3generator.dll. I am guessing these are the files that run the city generator. What can I do to fix this? I know the problem comes from installing the annual because when I uninstall it CC3+ works normally. Is their something in the installation that I am not doing?

The DotNET framework fails to install? What error do you get? What version of Windows are you running?
  • Fixed. I didn''t realize how far my Windows updates were behind. I installed the framework and it works just fine now. Thanks for your response Dogtag.

Woot! Glad it was something that simple.  :-D

I also have an issue since installing this annual, related to those very same DLL. However, I don't have any message related to the .NET framework (which is totally up-to-date, as well as my windows installation). After those 2 message boxes, the program still starts, and seems to be working, as far as I can tell (except for the CITY command, of course).

I'm not sure how to investigate this issue.

Do you actually have the .net 3.5 framework installed? Having just 4.x won't do.
The most common reason for those tho dll's erroring out is that they can't be loaded because they require a version of .net not present.
Windows 10 should automatically detect this and offer to install the required version automatically, but I don't think any earlier versions do.

I think Windows 10 updates them automatically anyway. I recently installed the new City generator without any problems at all. I just don't seem to get .net errors any more - not for any software installs.

That was it. Although I have windows 10 with the latest updates, this framework had never been installed before, and Windows did not suggest I should install it, even less install it transparently.
I installed it manually, and it now works.

With any luck Win 10 will continue to update it automatically now that its on your system :)

I remember facing this issue when I manually installed the CC3 version of the City Generator on CC3+, and according to my notes, I fixed that by installing Visual C++ Redistributable (can't remember which version).

  • Boosting this in 2025... Yes, the City Generator component still needs the .NET 3.5 framework. Here's how I got rid of the error:

    1. Win + R to open the mini command prompt.
    2. Type optionalfeatures and press Enter
    3. Check the first box to enable .NET Framework 3.5 -> OK
    4. Let Windows install the files (took my 1 y/o laptop a loooong time) -> reboot

  • That's odd, because I recently downloaded and installed all the CC3+ software, including this Annual, onto a new Win 11 machine, and had no problems with it. Also just did a quick test, and it generates a new random city without any problems either. It's possible Win 11 did something of this kind in the background without me noticing during the downloading and installation, of course, but it does seem strange this (apparently) doesn't seem to have affected everyone equally over the years since it was first reported.
