I feel that grid of yours detract a bit from the map. Have you considered just using a scale bar instead? Or perhaps use a transparency effect on the grid?

I used to use scale bars, but felt it was difficult to figure out how far apart towns, castles, etc. were from each other. So I decided to use a light color square grid. I try to make the grid readable, but as low contrast as possible. I'm not always successful.
