Using Mike Schley symbols

When starting a new map with MS symbols is there a way to open all the symbols he has made from the different monthly content and the SS4 & SS5 sets in one long list? I find my self using a symbol but not able to remember where it was when working on the next map. Would like to save it to open for different maps.

  • I don't think there is currently, although some do seem to appear in some of the catalogues - just not all. It is irritating.

Don't know if it will help, but this is my own list for what the Mike Schley dungeon (only) symbols are:

    • Monthly 1 = Woodcutter
    • Monthly 2 = Smithy
    • Monthly 3 = Market
    • Monthly 4 = Necromancer
    • Monthly 5 = Temple
    • Monthly 6 = Dragon Lair
    • Monthly 7 = Prison
    • Monthly 8 = Siege
    • Monthly 9 = Stables
    • Monthly 10 = Summoner
    • Monthly 11 = Fungal
    • Monthly 12 = Up and Down
    • Monthly 13 = Thrones
    • Monthly 14 = Man of Science
    • Monthly 15 = Graveyard

Of course, you still need to remember what the names mean...

  • I once made this list and saved it in a .txt file, but it ended up being deleted by accident, and every time I click on the monthly items one by one until I find them, I always think about making this list again. Thank you. 😅

  • I have made a copy of the list and noticed that you said "Dungeon only".

I will go looking for any other city style symbols this weekend and will post them here if i find any.

  • To create a new symbol catalog file:

A symbol catalog is a drawing file that only contains symbol definitions. You can create a symbol catalog by creating the symbol definitions in a drawing and saving it as an .fsc file. Symbol catalogs should use no grouping and contain nothing but symbol definitions. Use the Symbol Manager to edit your symbols. Save the file as a CC3 FSC Symbol Catalog.

!! Sue has an explanation of how to make your own custom catalog in a thread called "creating symbol catalogs for new style"

    Q

  • I have made my own symbol catalogues for MS - and now no more problems

  • i am hoping to use sue instructions and make my own MS catalog and ad a few favorite drawing tools.

Schleys art in the map styles is my favorite, all of the maps for our home brew campaign have been done in MS style.

i don't know why all of a sudden i have thought about making a custom catalog , even if I didn’t realize what I was wanting. But this is going to be a game changer have the things I want in the best place to find them.

im sure there will be many more questions- thank you all for being so helpful!

  • Yes, I don't use any one mapping style all that frequently, but I've used the MS Dungeon items a couple of times recently, hence that list!

I did think of mentioning the option to create a new symbol catalogue, but actually doing so is a bit involved, and I forgot Sue's earlier posting on the subject!

Good luck getting one to suit your needs sorted!

Yeah. So did I, which is even worse.

  • This is how I set up the Structures for Mike Schley - each of the submenus has its own catalogue, which I made using the method to create your own symbol catalogue by importing the png symbols from the relevant png files into the new catalogue. And I find it so very simple now to use and find all the symbols I need.

I have done similar things with vegetation and Borders.

  • @Quenten

each of these in the list are separate catalogs.

is it possible to add a symbol to a catalog if you find one the was missed the first go around? If so could you pre make each catalog and add as you go ?

  • Could you explain how to import PNGs to new catalog ?

  • Open the FSC file you wish the new pngs to go to - usually in a folder in the Symbols folder on your CC3+Data folder.

Click on Symbols menu, then Symbol manager. You will get a screen like this:

Click on Import PNGs and you will get a screen like this:

Click on Browse, and go to the folder which contains the PNGs you want. Open the folder and click on any of the pngs.

If the pngs already are in the 4 resolutions (Hi, Lo, VH or VL) then DO NOT CLICK 'Create other resolutions. If the png you want is NOT in the 4 resolutions, then do click on that. Then click OK.

When it is finished it will tell you how many symbols in the catalog and how many were updated or new ones created.

Then Open the Symbol manager again, and go through the symbols - the ones you added will be at the end of the list. You may have added pngs you don't want - just select them and press the delete button on the symbol manager menu (see above).

You can also reorder the symbols as they appear in the catalog.

Finally, click on the first symbol on the list, then select all the rest by using the Shift key on your computer and clicking on the last symbol. Then click Save as Catalog. Then click Save on the main menu, and you will have the new png along with all the other symbols that were in the catalog.

If you make changes to an existing official catalog, it is often better to give it a new name, otherwise it may be overwritten when there are updates, or if you have to reinstall everything.

Hope this is a little clearer than mud. Good luck.
