Live Mapping: OSR Dungeons

Hi everyone! :)
I haven't been able to post the video link in this thread the usual way this time, but the live mapping session will still happen tomorrow. The unexpected upshot of this glitch is that I don't have to repeat Ralf's words:
Come along and join the show to ask your questions and make suggestions, or you can continue the discussion after the event in this thread.

30 minutes :)
That was fun! And so easy to make a good-looking map quickly - if you're Ralf, anyway!
@Don Anderson Jr. Did you get a map open for the show, or were you like us a bit absorbed by watching Ralf?
I had it set on defined template. I switched that off, then it showed me the annual list.
Tried to follow along with Ralf, but he's so fast with his commands. So I just tried to wing it and have "Happy Accident's" like Bob Ross.
Here's what I came up with.
Couldn't break apart the wall behind the secret door. Good enough though lol.
That's great fun! If you switch on the sheet effects you'll get the full effect. I'm glad you found it.
Yes - Ralf is fast. I think that's why there aren't that many comments. Everyone is busy watching Ralf.
Yea he did a few commands I've never seen. The copy, and the rounded corners. I will have to re-watch and see exactly what he did there.
I still swear this is a college level program to be a super proficient user. There is just so much beyond making basic maps.
It has a lot of power. Familiarity with a style makes everything much easier.
I like how it simultaneously stretches both my creative mind and my analytical, problem-solving mind. And there’s always something new to learn.
Impressed you managed to create anything at all while also trying to watch what Ralf was doing @Don Anderson Jr., and keep an eye on the livechat! And it looks good, too!
As Sue said, this is such an early style, it's one that the effects aren't automatically preloaded when you open the file; that's easily amended, but it can be annoying sometimes if you don't realise and wonder what's happened to the map (from frequent personal experience 😏).
This is what I made (mostly during the stream - had to drop before it was over). Need to add labels and such.
Yea it was a challenge. Ralf does an amazing job. What second nature to him is not to us. So thankfully it is recorded and we can go back and deduce what he did.
Nice work AmerigoV.
I used some doors from another style, but I then attempted to do RGB in sepia to try tie all the tones together.
This style brings back memories. I found a photo of a time when Ernie Gygax visited my house. He was the oldest child of Gary Gygax who was one of the main people behind Dungeons and Dragons. Ernie brought an old map to run a game with. He made it as a child to play his dad's new game. This, by some accounts, was the first player-made map for D&D. These CC3 maps capture the feeling I had when I saw that map.
It's hard to see detail in this photo, but I assure you it looks a lot like Ralf's map. (Note the book in the foreground, which is Ernie's dad's original, hand annotated copy of the 1E Players Handbook.)
I think this style is very pure.
Just imagine the worth of that DMG.
I've been lucky enough to meet a few really important figures of D&D. Sadly none of the Gygax clan.
Thanks for sharing that.
Oh my god. I still have that edition of the DM’s Guide though probably not worth a fraction of Gary Gygax’s hand-annotated copy — that one would be worth a mint!
Thanks for the kind comments, guys. I need to go slower during the mapping videos, but if I get into my flow, I just forget that people are actually watching and trying to follow. :P Here's the map created during the session.
You are not alone in this! Mine has a lot of highlighter-coloured paragraphs, to identify what was important and what was mere waffle in it. We were not impressed back in the day by its Great Rules Bloat compared to the original softback, small, booklet-forms of the three rulebooks, and the somewhat thicker supplements. Plus we'd already homebrewed so much stuff, we probably didn't really need it. That might explain why mine's still in rather better condition than that in the photo (guessing that EGG probably used it FAR more than me)!
Sorry, yes it was the DMG. I didn't know one particular rule, so he handed it to me to use. I handled it /very/ carefully.
I just forget that people are actually watching and trying to follow
I have a hard enough time keeping one eye on the chat. Couldn't imagine trying to watch Ralf, watch the chat, and map at the same time! Fortunately, since the videos are archived, I can and often do rewatch the video later as a guide to my own mapping.
Fantastic video Ralf. I was the one who requested it. This annual is perfect for One-Page Dungeon adventures and I am glad you brought some attention to it. Thanks again!
We've done so many live mapping sessions now that we're almost running out of material, so requests (as long as they are possible in the space of an hour) are always welcome, and quite likely to be answered.
At the last count I think there were already more than 200 of them.

I'm sure we're all shocked to learn you don't remember every one, and all the time-codes for every single item discussed in them, Sue 😉!
I offered to do that once when it was only about 100 videos, but it would have taken a month back then.
I briefly looked into whether it was possible to do automated transcripts that would be searchable, and I think there is (I had to do that for a work-related webinar ironically about copyright & artificial intelligence), but the transcripts still require extensive cleanup. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if there’s a decent technical solution in due time.
That would be amazing to have bookmarks on the commnads in each video.
Sometimes the commands used just come out of nowhere. I know plenty of times I've been like "WTF" when Ralf does something.
I still need to go back and see how he did rounded corners on the square tool.
