Query about Symbol Manager and Fill Style Properties.

So I have started changing where I want certain symbols to appear on which sheets.

Does each map have it's own symbol manager, or is that the symbol manager for all CC3+ files?

Tried reading in the CC and TouM PDF's, but didn't find a definitive answer.

What about the Fill Style Properties. Like when you add a new one and changing it's scale. Does that only save to that map, that map style or CC3+ as a whole?

The Symbol Manager shows only the symbols that are present in the current map.

If you set things up a certain way in your map by editing a symbol or changing which sheet you want it to be on when it's pasted, you can only transfer those changes to other maps by saving your modified set as a new catalogue file ([filename].FSC). Make sure you select all the symbols you want to include in that file before you save it using the button at the top right of the Symbol Manager.

Most catalogue files are saved in the parent folder that contains the folder the symbols came from, and named after that subfolder. For example if you have a folder called Structures in an overland style containing all the structure symbols, the catalogue will be called Structures.FSC and appear in the style's symbols folder at the same level as the Structures folder. It's a convention that helps to keep things clear and easy to understand. However, if you have symbols from several different styles in your new catalogue it will be largely up to you where you should save your new catalogue file.

If you change the scale of a fill it only applies to that map. If you want to make the change a permanent one you need to make a new personalised template file. It's best to leave the original template file alone and save a version of it with your name or initials as a suffix. For example "Mike Schley Overland DA.FCT".

    Excellent. I was just curious.

There are certain categories of symbols in my opinion, that shouldn't be on the SYMBOLS sheet. Fences, dormers, chimneys, boats etc.

I don't understand why buildings show up on SYMBOLS, then other ones on BUILDINGS.

    Thanks for the answer Sue.

    You're welcome :)

As far as which sheet symbols go on, there are usually several sheets that start with SYMBOLS, and then have different endings, like LOW, TALL, or TREES. That's why the wildcard "*" is used after SYMBOLS (SYMBOLS*) in the Symbols Settings dialog, leaving the user to decide which of the available symbols sheets to put the symbol on by making that one the active sheet.

Sometimes it's important that symbols go on an exact SYMBOLS sheet. In those cases you may find a more specific Force Sheet instruction, like SYMBOLS FLAT for rugs and spills.

However, there is a disadvantage to this more specific instruction. Users may not always want to put that particular symbol on the named sheet, so it is more usual to use the first method.

Most house symbols (ie, things in the symbol catalogue) will go on a SYMBOLS, or SYMBOLS BUILDINGS sheet. However, if you draw a House or Street entity they are not symbols and go on a BUILDINGS sheet.
