Is there a symbol spreadsheet? Database???

I am totally curious if there is a spreadsheet or a database of the whole symbol collection?

Is this a project that people would be interested in starting if there isn't?

This was sparked due to me trying to find a top down campfire and some fallen logs. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be pretty thankful so I can finish my current map.

Not as far as I know.

You can generate a sheet of all the symbols as images in a single symbol catalogue using "Create catalogue thumbnail file..." in the Symbols menu. That would give you a visual display, but you would have to do that for every catalogue that's ever been created, and that must be in the thousands by now.

  • I love you Sue.

I am going to have to try this. Is there a specific map style I should start with or will any give me access to all.

It works on whatever symbol catalogue you have open at the moment you use the command. So the order you do all the catalogues is up to you. Doing them all would take days, or even weeks.

This won't index anything at all, but show little thumbnails of the symbols in exactly the order they appear in the catalogue. The best thing is to try it for the one you have open right now and judge whether or not it would be useful to you.

To be clear - you have to open the actual catalogue files, and not just do it from any old map. If you do it from a map it will just give you the symbols in that map.

  • I started to create something in MS Word when I first got started but quickly gave up. I find it easier to just navigate to the Symbols directory (and sometimes a lower subdirectory, like Dungeons) and then search for “campfire” or whatever I’m looking for. Consider adding “_vh” or “_hi” to your query to filter out the duplicates in every size, like campfire*_hi

Searching is probably much more efficient, considering that new symbols are being added all the time, so a spreadsheet or database would have to be constantly updated at least once a month to add the free monthly symbols and the symbols from the new annual.

This is absolutely doable, but with the current state of automation, it is quite painful.
I got partway a few years ago, but it's been so long I don't even quite remember how the scripts I wrote to help work.
