How to show coastal shoals

I'm working on a map of the 17th century Caribbean using the Annual Parchment style, and it doesn't appear to have any kind of fill pattern for coastal shoals (of which there are many). I'm thinking a fill pattern would be easiest, but I so far I haven't found one and I'm not good at making such things.

Any suggestions?

Do you mean sand banks and reefs?

If you do the easiest way is as you suspect a fill pattern would be best.

If your ocean is the current background you could add a new background underneath it that is some kind of sand colour all over, then add a Colour Key and an edge fade inner to the original background sheet and draw points in the colour key in a pattern where you want the shoals to be. The edge fade doesn't have to have zero opacity at the outside edge, so you could set it to 50% fading up to 100% opacity for the rest of the ocean.

It will look a bit blobby unless you place the points fairly close together.
  • I used to use a rock pattern fill. Its in the symbols somewhere, I remember using it in CC2 and CC3.

But I've been thinking about this, I haven't tested it.

    sheets

    water
    some rocks
a lighter water color bitmap fill, with transparency effect.
