Hi, after lurking, reading and learning for years I decided to post a map I currently am working on.
It is a small Village at the border of a bif senady desert in a campaign I curretly master.
The Houses are not complete and I am not yet happy with the dunes.

I set the Background of the Map to CA157_Grass_dry_light, then made a sheet directly above the Background with an Edge Fade, Inner; A Texturize (using an png of sand from above[I experimented with a lot of textures until I found one to my liking]) an a Transparency.
On This sheet I drew a solid polygon in color 29.
The dunes are on their own sheet above the desert backgound, long Polygons in the same color. The effects are: Bevel, lighted and Edge Fade, Inner.
The Shadows of the Dunes are on a sheet between the desert background and the dunes with a Blur, Edge Fade, Inner and Transparency of 50
Love the dunes.
Where the prevailing winds come from two slightly different, but similar directions (so if the dunes ran straight south to north, the two prevailing winds could blow from between roughly SSE to SE, and SSW to SW, say) that would give you linear dunes, but they'd be either longer and straighter than your current ones, with a similarly symmetrical form, or they should have more small winding variations along their lengths, where the winds haven't blow with equal strength.
Knowing how you want the prevailing winds to work, given the proximity of your settlement to the desert's edge, might tell you better how the dunes should look. If the predominant wind is from the northeast, for example, the settlement is in trouble!
I played around with the dunes and like them better now. Most likely I will do some more tweaking in this map and the play around with different methods in another map.
The houses are a litte different now and I added some trackmarks to the market.
