Actual scale vs. visual scale

I am working on a palisade post symbol for the Harnic style I have been revamping. In Mappa Harnica the posts have a diameter of 8 map units, basically 8-feet. Most posts wouldn’t have been more than 2-feet. Is it better for things like this to be more of the visual scale (easier to see) or the actual scale (harder to see unless zoomed in?

Actual scale. People will be making maps in all kinds of different scales, and being able to trust that symbols are accurate are important. People can scale them up if they want to, but the default should be the actual scale. (This do not apply to overland maps, where most symbols just serve as markers, but is relevant in floor plan/city scale maps)

The local maps are 1800x2400 feet, so I guess that equates to a city scale map. Thanks.
