If I have FT3, do I need Wilbur? Are those functions subsumed into FT3, and if not, are there mapping operations useful to split between the two programs?
Some, but not all of the operations available in Wilbur can be done in FT3, though the level of detail is not as good as you can achieve in Wilbur.
I think the reason these apps are separate is that one is a 3D random world generator that uses fractals (which are really complicated 3D vectors), whereas the other is a bitmap heightmap editor.
Thanks for the responses. So both programs are useful, and they can import/export between each other, I'm assuming? Is there a tutorial somewhere that illustrates how they are used together?
I did a detailed tutorial about how to use both apps together as the November issue of last year's Cartographer's Annual. However, this is only my own personal method. There are several used by different artists.
I tried a heightmap import into fractal and after many iterations I gave up. I did not achieve the results I wanted. I mean if there was a great greyscale converter for original maps. Which then you could import it that would be awesome.
Its not hard to move worlds between FT3 and Wilbur. You just need to save the FT3 world as a Special MDR file (.MDR) and open it in Wilbur. Then, when the editing is done (usually erosion), save the MDR file and reopen it in FT3.
I download the wilbur.zip, unzip it, and then run the setup program. A normal installation routine occurs and looks successful. But where is Wilbur? No program under W, nothing under F (Fracterra)? Please show me where I am being dense.
The idiot who wrote that installer didn't bother to put in a proper shortcut. You have to go hunting for the program yourself (it should be in Program Files\Slayton Software or something like that). Alternatively, Windows Search might turn up "Wilbur" in the search box.
If you put "Wilbur software" in the search box it comes up. It doesn't seem to appear if you only put "Wilbur" in the search bar.
Edit: Oh silly me! I was thinking you were looking for the Fracterra page, not where it might be on your system!
Edit2: Windows search has this irritating habit of searching the Quick Access folder by default. You have to scroll down and select This Computer and C drive (or whatever main drive you have) and then search. It works fine then. That's MS messing everyone around again. No surprises there!
