Old Yahoo groups

All, Yahoo is folding up all of the old Yahoo Groups. There are a number of CC groups out there if anyone is interested in any of the files or messages you need to download them by the end of November (to be on the safe side). All files will be gone on Dec 14th.

    Yet a part of digital history goes away. It is an interesting concept, because digital history is so much easier to store than physical history (like books, buildings, people, etc), but yet, it goes away at a much greater rate.

    Seems that the email functionality of groups stays behind for now, so the old group can still be used as pure email mailing lists, but the ability to access old messages goes away, same with all other content stored at the website.

    Storing the data is pretty straightforward, but providing access to the data is much more complicated. I shudder to think about the age, overcomplexity, and maintenance costs for their forum software (and its database backends) in order for Yahoo! to keep it up to current privacy, security, and compatibility standards.
