Because I am working on each a little at a time, and it stops me becoming more confused than usual. I actually do the best work, when I am sort of multi-tasking, even though I'm a boy
Here is my progress. All mountains and lakes named, along with some caves and rivers and towns. The caves are numbered according to JimP's schema - I note there are two 10's! I have made new vector symbols for towers and monasteries. I will also be adding mileage numbers along the roads, as per modern road maps. The cave names in general will include both JimP's names and the Gaelic translation, as best I can (Bastion is translated as Strong Fort in Gaelic). Comments and critique are very welcome.
Heavens to Murgatroid ! Sigh. I'll just go with the names.. and keep the two 10s. One has a name and the other doesn't. I'll name the one that hasn't a name later on.
Remember, whatever names you choose for the so far unnamed dungeons, I will translate into Gaelic, and put both names on the map. And frankly, apart from the Rorial Halls (6) and Mithlos Holes (8), feel free to use whatever names you like, regardless of whether they have names at present - the map is unfinished, and I can translate your English names into Gaelic as per Caves 1 and 2. And I get fun out of seeing how they turn out. Like 'Strider' becomes 'Telcontar' in LOTR
3) Brón Dorcha 4) Iontacháit 5) Geata-thuaidh 7) Jadzidun 9) Daefaldun 10) Dun Elrogel 10) Láidir Thinmarethdún 11) Zogniladún 12) Fairegleann 13) Abhannfaire 14) Thrarasi Faire 15) Fairlocha 16) Coimeád an Iarthair 17) Foraoisefaire I have changed 16 to Western Hill Keep, just so as not to repeat dun all the time. Please use your English names for your dungeons, and I will put both on my map. Thanks, Jim, you're a brick.
Another update - highway labels, national parks, and all caves and ruins named. Just a few rivers, and villages and towns to go, and completion of distance measuring between intermediate dots.
The forest is on Sheet TERRAIN with 50%% transparency, Layer VEGETATION, colour 85, and fill pattern Random (Brush Pattern). It was not part of the Drawing tools. Nor were some of the symbols, but they are all vector, so should be no awful red X's. The mountain and hill contours as per the drawing tools in the Modern Political Style Annual 4 (2010), Issue No 42, using mountain and Hill relief (low and High) bitmaps, with various changed in Hue/Saturation and transparency.
Virtually complete. I have heights of mountains and some more road distances to calculate. I have tried to make it look like a modern map you would buy in the newsagent. PLEASE... any and all critique wanted, so I can have this map as good as possible. And it is a special gift for Remy Monsen who was interested to see how a fantasy map in Schley style would translate to this style. I hope you like it, Remy.
It is quite interesting, but it doesn't feel much like a fantasy map anymore. But, that's really the point of that style anyway. It gets very difficult to not think of the roads in that map as modern asphalt highways.
Of course, all this gets me thinking of another crazy project, mapping the same location up through the ages, with map styles more or less representatives for the era being mapped, and of course have the location change appropriately between each map to reflect the passage of time and expansion of civilization.
Would you think I was very picky if I mentioned the labels again?
Its just that the mountain names in some places are a tiny bit too close to the point of the triangle and at this scale appear to touch them, which is a little distracting. They could also be uniformly centred above the point?
The Elen Daelarion - Modern Political is now in the atlas. A great map, although I have to admit, it looks a bit misplaced among all the fantasy maps in there. But it is quite cool to be able to see how much flavor a map style imparts on the understanding of the map when you put this side by side with one of the fantasy version(s).
Thanks for contributing. If we continue at the current pace, we will dwarf the FR Atlas in a few years.

Why are you doing these in separate threads?
I'm no good at multi-tasking either, so I do know what you mean

The only thing I would adjust is where the labels have bumped into symbols - just to inch them away a mm or two?

Where does the forest fill come from,? I did not initially see it within the pre-built drawing tools.

Other than that a great job
