integrating downloaded templates

Okay, so I've downloaded all sorts of cool templates from the downloads page. Before I screw something up, how do I load them into CC3? Right now I've got a bunch of .zip files on my desk top, so from there, how do I get them to the point that I can access them from CC3?

The best way to have them easily accessible is to copy them (the .fct files) directly to the appropriate sub directory inside your Templates directory (Found in your main CC3 directory). This way, whenever you create a new map, and select the "Pick a pre-defined templste" option, they should be listed along with your other templates.
The second option is to create your own subdirectory under "Templates" (or anywhere else). Then, when you want to use one of the new templates, create a new map, and use the "Pick a pre-defined template" option. Now, you can hit the "Select Path" button to browse to the directory where you have your custom templates. Select one of them (Doesn't matter which) and open it, and you will be returned to the template selection window, showing all templates from that directory.
If you wish to use this drawing as a template, the fix is simple however. Just rename it from .fcw to .fct and you should be set.
Anyway, the reason the map looks "bad" when you use it is most probably because you haven't turned on the map effects. That map uses effects to look good. Just type
Effectson
<Enter> to load the effects, and the map should look much better (Or open the "Sheets and Effects" dialog and turn on effects there.)There is also a big possibility that you don't have the font the map uses installed on your computer, resulting in a boring replacement font.
If you like that map style, you should consider buying the Cartographers Annual. The January 2008 issue contains the tools required to make maps in that style.
