Varicolour buildings question

Is it possible to create and use a "vari" file as well as a "_map" file for the same symbol?
I've read in the Tome that the usual way to create varicolour building symbols is to add 1 green to the map file where you want the symbol to be varicolour, and then tell the symbol to be varicolour when you create the catalogue (if I understood it correctly), but I had in mind a more subtle effect than the chosen colour being either solidly on, or solidly off.

I've got an extremely OTT orange bark roof fill to sort out first (its practically dayglow), but I'll give it a go in the morning.
Take a look at the CD3 house symbols of the Bitmap A style. Both the normal and the varicolor versions use exactly the same pngs, the only difference is the above option they have set.
I will do that.
I might also still just have a little go with a tiny square house - just to stop my mind going on and on about it in the background of my more important thoughts
