Deleteing a point in smooth polygon

I sometimes get in the midst of drawing a large complex polygon or line and click in the wrong place and I want to delete the misdrawn point and continue.
The manual says I can push the delete key on my keyboard, but that doesn't seem to be working. The only command that shows is the corner command "C". I have tried the back space key and the "d" key to no avail. Reading the manual is no help in showing me how to turn the ability to turn the feature back on. I know I have done this before, but I am mystified.
The only recourse is to right click to finish the polygon, then either delete it or push undo, which of course means massive amounts of rework.
