Community Atlas - Artemisia - Hellenic Portal Gate
Here is my unfinished entry to the Cartographer's Guild competition. It is quite difficult to map on a camping holiday I have found.
This portal is a one-way portal from Earth, specifically Babylon region, from where the Minotaurs and Hellenes have arrived on Artemisia. There is a secret organization dedicated to guarding it against unwanted immigrants - the last being a group of Al Qaida soldiers. It is situated by a lake on the border of the Irisian City States and the Leondar Imperium

Pity you didn't finish it.
I think I've also been a but busy. I didn't see it in the Lite Challenge in time to make a comment before the threads closed and the voting started.
The Order has collected many items from their visitors - even a tank and plane! They particularly like the motor cars, even though they don't understand them, despite torturing their ill-fated prisoners. These prisoners are housed in the cell block, which is supplied with a torture wheel for each block, so the remaining prisoners are softened by the screams of the latest victim. However, the Order do not consider that they are evil. but rather protectors of Artemisia from the depredations that an advanced civilization would wreak.
In another cellblock, are strange creatures, who appear to come from other planes, and are studied in the dissection rooms.
One advance the Order has managed to gain some knowledge about is the aeronautical principles behind plane flight, but not the mechanism for fueling them, or indeed about motors at all. However, they have passed this knowledge onto the military in Stromphe, where the Academy is assembling hybrid 'planes' powered by magic.
The site of the portal is inside man-made 'dungeon' ti a large hillside. The entrance is guarded by an underground lake infested by fearsome monsters under control by the Order.
The lake thunders out the cliff as a mighty waterfall, where it forms a river, but a 'ruined' castle keep stands in the middle of the lake.
When the Order is not 'on duty', they abide in a small collection of cottages camouflaged as drab, partly ruined buildings. Inside they are beautifully appointed and very comfortable.
I will be concentrating on improving the cliff face (feel free to make suggestions) and the ruined castle, using Par Lindstrom's symbols.
I have used Par Lindstrom's ruined city annual for this - thanks so much Par. Please tell me what you would consider fixing/altering.
I will be redoing the village in the NW next.
I think this is the first time I've seen you use free lines to express things like escarpments and cliffs.
I understand why you have done them diagonally. Its very difficult to make lines that are perpendicular to the two edges of the cliff actually look like a cliff face. I think, however, that since the cliff lines are diagonal, the waterfall might make more sense if it is also diagonal? Maybe? So that the waterfall is more a part of the cliff?
Oh, and the key. (To the map, not the dungeon)
