Vacation

Hi everyone, I will be away fro 23 July till 1 Nov. I will try to get the ground floor of the Spiros Monastery done before I go, and a revision of Karpanov village. I am unfortunately very depressed at the moment, and have difficulty doing anything, so if I seem short, or say something thoughtless, please forgive me. Apart from those 2 maps I mentioned (which I quite probably will not finish) I will see you all again in November.

Not sure how we'll manage without your regular inspiration during your holiday Quenten. As no stranger to depression over a very long time, I can but send positive thoughts your way, and hope that the knowledge of the pleasure you've brought to the Forum by your comments and impressive mapping output will help further buoy your spirits before and during your trip. And doubtless you'll pick up plenty of ideas for new maps and constructions while you're away, to benefit us all after your safe return!

Have a great vacation Quenten! I know I would be really excited to go to either one of those countries. I've been all over Asia but I've never been to Great Britain or any other part of Europe.

I'm taking a sketch book for castles, cathedrals, churches, villages and ruins. Hope to get good inspiration for my maps - not too many pre 18th C buildings in Australia!

Just the millions of years old "lost city of Elder Things" in Western Australia, but it's not much of a vacation spot. ;-)

We do seem to specialise in preserving historic buildings, though I would think a camera would be better to snap everything quickly, rather than failing to see as much as possible in the time you will be here!

I thoroughly recommend a visit to as many Welsh castles as you can manage - especially Castell Caernarfon (if you're going to north Wales at all)

In a bit of a rush this morning (as usual) so I haven't time to turn this into a link, but this is Caernarfon:

Excellent! I think its the only remaining nearly complete medieval walled city we have left in the UK. The rest were all massively overdeveloped and the walls left to decay and disappear.

The English castles/abbeys were mostly ruined by Henry VIII, and are just segments of wall dotted around an uneven mound of green space - either that, or they have been over-preserved (in my opinion), and most of the liveable ones are indeed lived in and cost an arm and a leg to visit (or are totally private and only something you can view from afar). No disrespect to the Scottish castles, but to me they seem far more modern for the most part than the Welsh ones

I'm sure I will. We leave Flinders Island Monday morning (we are 10 hours ahead of UK). So after that, I'll be a very infrequent visitor here till 1 Nov. A pity I haven't finished the ground floor of the monastery - only Church interior and outside the walls to do. Ah well. BTW, love JimP's addition to the Atlas - the first real dungeon

Well, the atlas won't go anywhere while you are away. The intention was always to let people take the time they need on the maps (including real life which sometimes intersects), not rush them done anyway. So don't worry about that. Perhaps your travels even gives you some additional inspiration for that particular map too.

My vacation in UK and Ireland is nearly at an end. I have been inspired by many castles, tombs, stone circles, ancient houses and forts, churches, monasteries and cathedrals, Roman forts, and many villages and towns. I intend to complete the monastery ground floor first, then redo Stromphe in Annual issue 9 - Modern Cities (pre 20th C style), then start mapping a few Roman forts, including a hexagonal one (for Myirandios mainly), a Manor house (based on Donegal Castle) to fit in the feudal fief I have previously started and which will go somewhere in Basher Bay, a Castle based on Beaumaris Castle in Anglesey in Wales to act as Target Castle in Basher Bay, a church based on St David’s Cathedral in Wales, a town and castle based on Scalloway in Shetland, and a town based on Tobermory in Mull (Hebrides). And there’s plenty more after that - I have done many sketches already, and can’t wait to get started again in CC3+.
Next vacation, planned for Feb next year to coincide with my neice’s wedding, I will be taking a laptop I have just ordered and will be waiting for me when I get back in 10 days time. At least I will not suffer from Acute Hypo-Profantasitis like I am now (with Chronic Acartographia to boot)!
