I think urine is used as a fixative in dying cloth as well - traditionally. At least it was used until the mid 20th century as a fixative for wool dyes in the Hebrides of Scotland
Yes it was, thanks for reminding me. Featured strongly in the Falco novels by Lindsay Davis, set in Imperial Rome (he was a private 'detective') Great reads
Several days of soaking to make the pigment stick - usually dried and powdered lichen and/or bark, sometimes berries leaves and roots as well. The length of time soaking in the dye dictated the strength and depth of the colour, but I don't think I would have wanted to wear anything 'brand new' after just a couple of non bio hand washes!
I now fully understand why you have called these areas 'Smell'.
These are for barracks etc. The walls and towers themselves are also military of course, and noone has attacked Stromphe for many decades - it is after all the top commercial city in Artemisia, and controls north-eastern trade on Nibirum. so noone wants to upset the applecart (except perhaps the Leondar Imperium). Finally, the main defence needed is naval, and the borders of the City States are far enough away. A liitle like ancient Athens, which had not much in say of military buildings, but relied on its citizens army
Just to show you I have not forgotten Stromphe, here are the Dock district, commercial and Agora districts. No vegetation or statues, and the ground will be reworked. My intention on finishing the city is to do floorplans of : Typical Inns and taverns, eating places, warehouses, shops, houses (poor, middle and upper class), temple and shrine, apartment blocks and shopping arcades. Special buildings, like Government buildings, prisons, courthouses, barracks etc I leave for others
I have decided to restart the city. First I am using the Early Modern City annual (no 9) and will do each district in detail as sub-maps (with 'typical building floorplans). This will make it easier (and faster) to get the whole city down, and also allow me to detail all of it in a series of District maps later on. I have also extended the borders, but the scale is still metric.

Here is an update, with all the physical features finished, except a waterfall. Next, the main buildings, a key, and some street and district names. It will be complete then, and I can get started on the District maps.
Here is an update - streets all done, some cartouches added and some buildings. More to add, then some labelling, and marking out district boundaries. Should be finished by Xmas, then I can get started on the district maps.
Here is the latest edition - westside reworked, some more buildings added and a frame added. Is there anything more I need - like more buildings? I will be doing each district in detail as submaps, and also adding the District names
Is it worth waiting on the final version of the city map in case there are things you might want to add (or indeed change) only after you've completed the area detail maps?
Hadn't noticed earlier, but the "QUARANTINE" and "CEMETERY" labels may need adjusting, so they're not in all capital letters. Also, is the PRISON of equal importance with the AGORA? Or should one or other, maybe even both, be changed to the more typical script style?
Haha. Point taken. I will fix the border a bit, add a few more buildings, then submit - hopefully, if any alteration of streets/buildings need to be adjusted later, Monsen won't actually kill me (or curse me with the Grey Wasting Paralysis)
Border fixed, a few new buildings, and District names added. I think this is as complete as this map needs to be, and I will start on the Dockside district first
Nice. I like the brown you're using for many of the labels a lot more than the black. Maybe consider adding a Blend Mode (overlay) effect to the solid black entities and text, to make them a little less harsh? Regardless, I really like your choice to use a late-age mapping style for an older map. Very creative — and effective!
I'll change the building colour to a darkish grey, easier than Blend; I MAY move the key, and I will add a few more buildings, then submit. I have exploded the text along the border, so everyone should see it as it is (I hope)

What's that texture on the bank of the mound? There's a heck of a lot of redundancy in it. Maybe it would look better scaled up quite a lot?
Good map !
And I love that the City of Thieves still has a prison!
Minor typo in "Mauseleums" though (and not just to the pedantic "Mausolea"!).

Rock on.
