When doing a map of ruins, I always begin by laying out what the original structure(s) looked like so that the ruin's layout makes sense.
I usually do this by hand, but am using CC3+ for ease of sharing.
The ruins will be those of Forrestal Manor. Here it is in its original form...

Now, this is the first of these overhead umm CD type maps? I like. The others (though I know they are technically expertly rendered from the maps I've seen) just strike me as strange. The color? the semi-realism? Not sure. But this one, I really like
I've received my yearly bonus and am going to install SOMETHING from Profantasy, but I can't figure out what. I'll take that to another discussion of course, but this map here makes my choices so much harder heh heh.
thanks
Cal
@Calibre - this is a very nice B&W city style by Par Lindstrom. I personally think it works best for smaller maps. There aren't a large number of symbols so if you would try doing a big city you might find it limited. It is perfect for this sort of map though.
I like how you use this style. I think B&W City maps are quite challenging. But you did a really great job!
I'm still trying to decide what style to use for the actual ruins. I'm torn between the basic DD3 and Vector. I've been looking through symbol catalogs to see which has what I'll need to fit my mental image. These types of maps always take me longer to do than the overland maps. There's a lot more detail to put in.
For this map, I decided to use a vector style. It has been a challenge to get it looking like I imagine it, but it is coming along. Still much work to be done, but thought I'd share and get any input and advice you might have to offer before I get too far along.
@Hadrian- Yes, the grey outlines are just placeholders for the buildings. Though the forest is encroaching on the ruins, I didn't want to loose track of where the original buildings were.
Looks Great !
I made a few minor changes and added more details. I'm almost finished, just need to add some shading to the road. Then it's on to doing the interiors of the chapel and manor house.
I also love that vector maps just work no matter what add-ons you have.
Thanks Lorelei. The shading is actually ridiculously easy. It is white and black lines of various widths, but mostly just width 0, with a blur added to 'smudge' the lines like you would with a blending stump on paper. Put white above the black to define the top edge. You'll see when this map is released.
I'm glad everyone is enjoying the vector art. I have fallen in love with it all over again. I love that if a symbol isn't quite right, you can just edit it in the symbol manager to change what ever you want and the new symbol just stays with the map and doesn't affect the original. This map was a pure joy to make once I figured out how best to combine vector objects with the sheet effects.
@ Monsen - I am finished with this map but intend to have interiors for the chapel (two floors) and the manor house (three floors). So a total of five additional maps. How do you want these? One at a time as I finish them, or all at once? Will you link them or should I?
You can link them if you want, but if not, it isn't a problem for me to do it. If you do link them, please follow the convention I've used in the rest of the atlas, where each hotspot is marked by a Color #6 rectangle on the HOTSPOTS sheet (No effects, placed last in the sheet order). There is a macro in the sidebar I add that toggles the visibility of this sheet to show/hide these hotspot markers.
I've passed this one to Monsen.
We are generating maps far quicker than I could have hoped for when we started this thing, but don't let that stop anyone, we still need a huge amount of maps yet. The FR Atlas contains 855 maps, would be fun if we could get this project up to that size one day.
