Community Atlas - Continent F "Peredur"

Here is my first draft of Continent F, which I have named "Peredur". It is a cool to very cold place. I see it as inhabited by Vikings and Celts - and the names will reflect these. Selkies also abound, as do Fomorian Giants and Trolls, and pesky dwarves.

I don't know what your usual style is because I haven't seen many of your maps, but if you want to avoid that edge fade inner on the ocean from giving you a square edge all the way around you may need to extend that polygon outside the map border.

But... you might prefer it the way it is. If so, please ignore my suggestion

What map projection did you use to export from FT? I've taken continent E and it should be similar to this one. Thanks!

I used the projection given by Monsen, and it looks quite different to the world map F. You may have to get back to Monsen about this. Perhaps he could send you the .fcw with the same projection as mine.

Well at last I can show some progress. I have great difficulty working out how to best portray the mountains - in the end, I went with just placing Mike Schley's symbols, as shown below. I have also done much of the inland plateau, which is surrounded by cliffs, and the rivers eventually flow into a chasm, via a swamp. I have also used Hadrian's ideas for settlement symbols as red circles. Much more to be done, and suggestions, criticism all welcome.

Thanks Hadrian. Still got to get your way of doing the mountains and hills right, but am experimenting on another of my maps. Do you use multiple polygons, or just a few snaky ones?

It depends the result i want to get. On berenur I used one politon per mountain area. It seems to work best, if the polygon is kept rather thin, but one can add 'arms' to display valleys.

On my 13th Age Style map I put two mountain polygons slightly offset on top of each other to in order to get a wider mountain range.

I'm looking forward to do a regional map on this continent.

Here is my latest offering on Peredur. All mountains, hills, rivers and settlements are done, as is all terrain except for a few wetlands, and river deltas. I will also add a few offshore islands, icebergs and text, then it will be done I think. Please feel free to criticize - I am fairly thick-skinned.

The giant lake in the center; does all the rivers drain into the lake?

Yes Charles they do, then drain out into the marshy area in the NE of the region, and from there into a chasm and an underground series of caverns.

Wow! Hasn't taken you long to fill this out and it is looking good.

The lands in the center seem brighter that anything else on the map - which draws my eye to it.
