"In the tribal culture of Polynesia, the war god Tu was represented by the turtle. Warriors wore the most tattoos, viewing them as armor that would protect them in battle."
"The characteristics of the turtle are deeply intertwined with its symbolism: • Long lived, they are seen as symbols of immortality. •Capable of laying a hundred eggs at one time, they are viewed as symbols of fertility and creation. •Their protective shell is associated with strength, security and stability. •Their ability to travel thousands of miles is associated with endurance and perseverance. •The sea turtle's ability to return home connects them with guidance, good luck and faithfulness. •Their slow movement has some negative connotations, such as the decreased mobility of old age, but primarily the slow, dogged movement of turtles denotes steadfastness..."
This compass rose represents both the War God Tu and the green sea turtle known as Kauila that was the protector of children.
Kauila is surrounded by a protective barrier of shark teeth. Polynesian shark teeth tattoos represent fierceness.
Love it Charles, both your map and compass, and your description and rationale for the compass. Certainly keeping the region Polynesian - I like it. And I found the info on the link to Kauila very interesting. And it has made the scale bigger and eminently readable
It looks like they upped the limit. When I first started it was 800 pixels.
The size limit though is still 1024kb or lower.
My map is coming in at 1,000kb using a 650 pixels width.
"The ProFantasy community forum allows users to upload images and other attachments limited to a size of 1024kb or lower. This should be plenty for most maps. You can upload images (.png, .jpg), maps (.fcw), symbol catalogs (.fsc), and templates (.fct) directly, but you can also use software to create compressed files (.zip, .rar) and attach those. Images attached to a post will be displayed inline, and should be resized to be a maximum of 1024 pixel wide before posting. "
I wanted to do the more traditional Polynesian tattoos designs for the icons, but the details are too small to show up on a map this scale. As such, I just went with tribal tattoo designs that I have used for the sea monsters and the compass rose.
Nice work. I have only ever dabbled in overland maps and done nothing overly satisfying. Seeing the work you guys have done on these continents, it makes me want to have a crack at this overland business.
Well, all the continents are spoken for, but that's only the top level. There are a lot of opportunity to get in some overland maps in this project. In fact, considering this is an entire world, I believe we will never run out
The map is absolutely gorgeous. I like your drawings. What kind of graphic tablet do you use?:)
BTW: I have continent B which is a bit west of your continent. Would you like the idea of connecting them (or at least their inhabitants) by a sea route?:)
I don't have a graphic tablet yet. I am using a desktop and mouse.
I had a similar idea. It helps viewers to realize just how close they are despite being on opposite sides of the map. I can put in a sea lane going from Port Digby to the eastern edge of the map and label it as going to your lands.
Seriously? That is amazing. It must have been a lot of work doing this with the mouse. I don't have a graphic tablet either, but I'm looking into getting one.
That would be cool. I'll do the same. I still have to come up with a proper name.:)

Here is my inspiration for Kauila: http://www.tammyyee.com/tt-kauila.html

JimP,
You can post 800 wide, but there is also a Mb limit as well. At 800 wide, my map is still over the Mb limit. As such, I have to shrink more.
The size limit though is still 1024kb or lower.

Can't wait to see more

Let me know what it is when you come up with one. :-)
