Modify Images Snappoint

Hello everyone!

I'm currently using Cosmographer and I'm trying to make a Galaxy map using a Hex grid. I also want to use some of the provided abstract images provided with Cosmographer (Triangles, Stars and circles) in order to represent planets.

But for some reason, it seam like the "anchor" (the point in the image that will snap to my grid) is not centered at all.

My question: Is there a way to change the "anchor" position on an image to ensure it can be centered inside my Hex?

Thanks

PS: I'm fairly new to this! Thanks for you help

The reason these stars, triangles and such are not centered is because they are designed to be used with traveller-style sector maps. In these maps, each type of symbol has a specific place in a hex, so these symbols are made with their origin such that they will correctly go to this position when you use the snap point in the middle of the hex, allowing for very quick and accurate placement.

You can change the position, but that means editing the symbol definition itself. Unless it is very important to get a pixel-precision placement in the center of the hex, I would probably just turn off Snap (The button in the bottom right corner) when placing these, using the symbol outline as a guide instead of the cursor.
  • Thanks a lot for you answer! it makes a lot more sense now!

How much work is required to modify the symbol? (or if I import new symbol, how can I ensure they would snap to the center of my Hex?

    Not much

You can either edit the symbol catalog in question (so that the change will apply to all future maps, or just the definition as it is used in the current map)
For the first option, you need to open up the symbol catalog as if it was a map (with File --> Open, I recommend editing a copy of the symbol catalog, and not the original)
For the second option, simply have your map open, then click once on every symbol in the symbol catalog you wish to modify, this will copy the definitions to your map (Symbols already used in the map will have their definitions here already)

The next steps will be identical no matter which approach you chose.
    - Open the symbol manager (Symbols --> Symbol Manager)
    - Select one of the symbols you wish to change
    - Hit the edit button, and define the editing window when requested
    - Select Move Origin from the View menu, and place the origin in the center of the symbols
    - close the symbol editing window, say yes to save the modified symbol.
    - Repeat the above for each symbol

Finally, if you went with modifying the actual symbol catalog option instead of just the current map, you need to remove the current symbol definition from your map (Because CC3(+) will always use the symbol definition in your map if it is present, overrideing the one from the catalog). So with your map open, open the symbol manager, and delete all the local copies of the symbols you just changed in the catalog (beware that this will remove any copies already placed in the map), now the updated symbols from the catalog should work fine (Provided you have loaded the correct symbol catalog, if you worked on a copy as I recommended, remember to load that instead of the origninal)

for some of my Traveller maps I turn off snap and place things where I want them to be.

My Traveller site if you want to see how I created a galaxy arm, sectors, sub-sector maps. The planet maps were done in FT3.
