This is off-topic but I wanted to extend my personal support and good wishes to New Zealand and to the Kiwis who frequent this board. Being on the other side of the planet, I just heard about the earthquake last night. I hope you're well.

Lets hope the death count doesn't rise above 2, and that they don't have any more aftershocks!
I'm hoping Ralf is still in Australia just yet, since it wasn't all that long ago that he left (even though it seems like ages)
My heart goes out to all those who were impacted by this.
I thought of Ralph too. Would have been a rude welcome to arrive then get nailed by an earthquake.
We live about 150km south of the epicentre so by the time it reached us in Christchurch it was just minor shaking. Went on for two minutes though which was very unusual and got pretty unsettling after awhile. Thought it was just a long aftershock (still get them even 5 years after Christchurch got hit).
We jumped on the Geonet website and was horrified to see it was actually two successive new quakes and absolutely nothing minor about them at all. 2 minutes of 7.8 would have been absolutely bloody terrifying. Only lucky thing was that it happened at midnight so the roads were not busy and most people were in bed.
Tough times ahead for the people living in that part of the country so I hope they get through it all ok. Our capital city, Wellington is 150km north and it's surprising how badly that fared too. Lots of land reclaimed from the sea there which always seems to fail dismally in earthquakes.
Makes you realise just how small we are when things like this happen.
Cheers all
Mike
Also, for the record, I heard that Ralf is, indeed, still in Australia and was nowhere near the quake.
