City map size?

I am mapping with the John speed style from Annual one in CD3 and was wondering what a good map size was for a large city map. The city maps are in feet so it seems large to place 10,000 ft in the width column. How have others got around this with city maps?

  • I use two methods.

    1) draw an outline of a city. Within that outline, mark off districts. Map the districts or district types.

Dtillan Orsti The Poor, Traveler's, and Parks links are links to geomorph areas of each type.

    2) draw an outline map. Then draw detailed areas.

    Brillar

These were in smaller areas, but I decided to join them into strips. The strips are CC2 maps.

Size of a city is also influenced by population, density of that population. There are many other variables that can affect city size but by far population is probably the most important
  • So is there a chart some where that states size of city in inches compared to population size? The maps are at a default 1000 ft by 800 ft which seems small for a city, as my street is a 1000 feet long.

This is completely dependent on time period, general wealth, population density and a host of other factors. I present this formula in the Tome to give a rough ballpark, but it does require you to know/estimate several factors about your city.
To get a ballpark value for this area, multiply the average family size with the number of floors in the average building, then divide this value by the average apartment size. Now, take the population of your city, and divide it by this number. That is the area of your city reserved for housing alone. You can at least double this to get a size that includes streets, businesses, warehouses and so on.
  • But those people out there that use CD3 to make cities, what measurement do they use to set up the map area? If I use your formula then the city map is going to be about 60,000 ft just for housing! if I then double this I am looking at a map thats 120,000 ft. that would be impossible to do. People who use CD3 must have a standard map size they use.
  • lasarde, this may not be helpful, but there was a discussion here not that long ago about city size, the difficulties of working with large cities, and other methods of creating large cities.

    You can read it here.

No. The point is to set the size depending on your needs. I rarely use the same map size for two different cities.

I don't see why this would be impossible? 120,000 square feet is just a map size of 240 x 500. My most recent city used a template of 2000 x 1600 (The city itself is only about 1 million square feet though, but I wanted a little extra room).
  • Ok that's the numbers I wanted I forgot about the square footage, so a large city of a million residents would a measurement of 2000x1600 on the map size in CD3. Awesome thanks.
