Multi-Part Symbols

So I am trying to make a Multi-Part symbol and seem to have hit a stumbling block.

I am following the directions on page 104 of the ToUM but it does not seem to work. In the attached image, I am trying to have the main symbol be on the SYMBOL SHEET, while the Text around the outside (the A, and 1, 2, & 3, which a Text Attributes) be on a SYMBOL (TEXT) sheet.

I have made a LINE STYLE called SYMBOL (TEXT), and changed the text to that line style, yet when I follow the rest of the steps:

With the Symbol Options bit set to Convert Line Style names to Sheets, CC3 will break the symbol into its entities and place the entities on sheets with those sheet names.

I do not get the symbol making the new sheets.

What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you are doing it right. Could you post your symbol catalog here so we can check it for problems?

So far the catalog has only a single image in it.

Your symbol didn't have the 'Convert Line Style names to Sheets' symbol option set. Once I set that and saved it, it worked fine.

(Also note that CC3 maps caches the symbol definition, so if you have already tested this symbol in a map, and later fixes this in the symbol catalog, your test map won't use the updated symbol from the symbol catalog before you purge the definition from the map.)

OK, so, I'll delete the cache, and try a few other things. I'm assuming I need to set the option, the save again as a symbol catalog?

You don't need to use the 'save as symbol catalog' option. Simply open up the symbol catalog itself for editing, change the option for the symbol, then save the catalog normally, as you would a map. (A symbol catalog and a map is actually the same thing, but with different purposes)

    i DON'T KNOW....Still not working.

    Here's what I do:

I open the following file (the file I am trying to build the symbol catalog from)

I ensure the A, and the 1, 2, & 3 as said are set to LINE STYLE: SYMBOL (TEXT)

I select everything else and set line style to SYMBOL

I then select DEFINE SYMBOL and select the whole shebang.

I then go to SYMBOL OPTIONS and ensure I have CONVERT LINE STYLE TO SHEET selected.

I finally save as a SYMBOL CATALOG.

I create a new map, and select the newly save symbol catalog, and while I can place the SYMBOL it does not make a SHEET called SYMBOL (TEXT) which page 104 of the ToUM says it is supposed to do.

I am using CC3 v 3.43, and have used for years, I just seem to be stuck here at this one step...Grrrr!

I think I may guess where you are going wrong. Are you selecting 'Symbol Options' directly from the Symbols menu? If you use this, you must do it with an edit window for that particular symbol open (i.e not just the edit window for the catalog).
The more common way to set symbol options is to open up the symbol manager, select the symbol in question from the symbol manager window, and hit the options button there. That will bring up symbol options for that particular symbol without opening up an individual edit window first.

    Yes, I am selecting the

SYMBOLS -> SYMBOL OPTIONS from the Menu. I am doing it that way, because ultimately I will have a few hundred symbols that will all have the same options defined. It is starting to sound like I will need to this a few hundred times, once for each symbol in the catalog.

No. If you do it via symbol manager, you can select any number of symbols and set the options all at once for all of them.

If you do Symbols -> Symbol Options you will have to do it individually for each symbol though, not to mention you must open an edit window for each symbol individually after defining it before accessing this menu item for it to apply to the actual symbol, so that is generally NOT a good way of doing this.

OK, so just tried a test, placed the symbol, went to SYMBOLS - SYMBOL MANAGER

Selected the symbol and it opened an edit window, and from there I selected the OPEN LINE STYLE SHEETS, and that worked.

But is there no way to build like 300 symbols and then save all of them and have them do this without then opening each to edit individually?

OK, I saw your response after I typed my message

Thanx for the Help Monsen, I think I have it now ;)

Of course, would have been nice if that step was included in the ToUM!

Not ontopic but... that looks like Battletech, right?

    Thumbs up!
  • NeonKnightNeonKnight Traveler
    It does, because....It Is ;)

I'm trying to build a Symbol Catalog that would allow me to quickly make Unit Icons like those found on Pages 337-341 of the STRATEGIC OPERATIONS book.

    Thanx!

Being a BIG fan of the series since i read the first novels and played the first Battletech (3025). Also have the Strategic Operations and the 4th Sucession War books, your symbols are very similar. Great job!
