symbols and contours changing color on me.

Hey everyone. I'm new. I'm making my first map for a campaign setting I'm writing called Felmoor. I'm making progress, but it's a little slow going. I've never done CAD anything before, or even DM'd before, really. Anyway. Right now, the snag I'm trying to fix has to do with symbols that can have custom colors. I'll set the color, put down a few trees using that color, then later I'm working with custom colored hill symbols, and the trees from before change to the color I set for the hills. Why don't they stay the color they were when I placed them?

On a related note, I was working with a contour (no fill, just a flat color)and the same thing happened. I placed it with one color, and the color changed afterwards when I was working with the hills. I don't understand why since I didn't check the "use current color" box in properties. Any ideas?

  • Here's a screenshot. Just under nomoni, there's a blueish shadow thing. That's a contour that I've applied a transparency and edge fade to. That, and the blue trees on the west side of the mountains, and the hills on the east of the mountains are all changing color to whatever color I have selected at the time.

There are only two reasons I can think of that makes that happen:
    - You are using Change properties, and you accidentally also included your trees when you did a color change (Maybe even included everything on the map, since a color change would only be visible on varicolored symbols and non-bitmap filled areas.)
    - Instead of yous picking a new color from the palette, you are actually editing the colors themselves in the palette. All entities reference the color from the palette by index, so if you edit the palette, everything using that color will show with the new one.

Did you do any of these?
  • I did edit a color or two, so that's probably it. I'll have to be careful about that. Is there any way to reset all the colors to default and start over?
  • When I'm making maps I save as filename01_0001, make some changes, then save as filename01_0002, etc.

That way I can easily back up to an earlier version of a map.

The other way is to change color on the items back to the color they were. Symbols would have to be deleted and replaced on the map to change the color of vari-color symbols.

When you open the palette dialog (by clicking on the current color) you have a button "Use default PAL".
