Grand Duchy of Morindale

This is a map i've worked up for a friend's campaign. She asked me to just create a landmass to my liking, as she has NO idea what she is doing yet and is hoping the land will inspire her story

This is beautiful! Is this the new style that was added to cc3+? I am so looking forward to giving it a shot! As soon as I finish up some of my other maps, lol.... I will have to add it to the list! I especially like your rivers, and Mt Shargrass. The font you used... may I ask what it is?

The font is the Tolkien font, its great, isn't it? I think it might be the default font for the Herwin Wielink style.

Yup, this is a fantastic piece. You have done it right by making sure there is not too much ocean. I have learned that if you leave too much ocean with this style you can see the repeating pattern on the ocean and it detracts from the map. Great Job!

That's a very helpful observation. I've just started sketching a map in this style: I'll keep it in mind.

And i just noticed the city in the mountains: Orodrid. Very nice! You had to combine two symbols for that?

Thanks and no, "Drordrid" (the Tolkien font has a very weird D) is just one of the symbols in the set.

This is really fantastic-- and helpful, too! I really like the natural look to the coasts you have here, and especially what you managed with the farmland! (I have yet to make the farmland look really good, but I haven't tried a more regional map yet, so this is a great idea of what I need to make it appear like!)

Lorelei, I actually want to ask you... how did you achieve the affect on your larger rivers and have it blend into the ocean? My husband has asked me to make an arctic island for him, and I'm using this style to do it. I have the one larger river like you have here.. but when I add effects, I can't get it to blend right. What''s your secret?

It looks to me like, it really isn't a river fill. It looks more like she drew the land to resemble a river rather than put a river over the land and blend it using sheets and effects. I've started doing this myself on certain maps as I think it makes them look better and I don't have to worry about the rivers being the exact same width all the way up the river. To me it just looks way more natural. And you don't have issues of trying to get the end of a river to blend in with the edge of the ocean.

Sometimes I draw a path for a river, other times I have drawn a narrow polygon so I can make a variable width river.

Lol...well, that only works if you know EXACTLY where you want your rivers to go. I usually don't know that until after I set my mountains ranges...

I usually draw out a quick map by hand (really like an elementary school drawing) just to give me an idea what my landmass is going to look like and where my mountains will be giving me a general idea if i want a large or massive river. When i first started making maps in Photoshop, i really liked the option to create a landmass, then "erase" course of the rivers, it looks very natural that way. This is the best alternative to that technique, but i does require a little "pre" planning

You can also use the landmass Edit function to change the coastline. Start the landmass drawing tool, hit E, then follow the input requests on the command line.
