Freezing a grid

I'm getting very frustrated. I've picked this software up for the first time in years to try to do a map and I can't get one simple (or so I thought) thing to work. I have CC3. I want to lay down a hex grid and then freeze it so I can edit things on top of it. This does not seem to work. I create a hex grid with the tool in the software. I am very careful to make sure the "Hex/Square Grid" layer is the active one. I also make sure the "Grid" sheet is selected. Once the grid has been created, I change the sheet to a different sheet and change the layer to a different layer then freeze the layer (the "F" in the little box on the layers screen. Despite this, I can select the hex grid and delete it (for example). I would expect that I could select things and delete them without worrying about accidentally deleting the hex grid if i have that layer frozen. I've gone through the process I mentioned at least a dozen times trying to find somewhere I screwed up and I cannot get the grid to freeze. I've tried variations like freezing all layers and nothing seems to work. I am able to put other things on layers and they are actually frozen and cannot be selected. This only seems to happen for grids. Am I doing something wrong or is this just how the software works?

I have CC3. I have used CC in the past, but my heavy use was 10+ years ago and mostly with CC2. I just don't remember this ever being a problem...

I'm sorry if this sounds rude or snippy. I'm just really frustrated right now.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Max, the problem is that the Grid is a grouped entity, and because groups can be spread over several layers, freezing a layer won't stop it form being selected. There's a couple workarounds:

    1. The temporary one: "Unlock" groups by clicking the Locked/Unlocked button in the lower right. As long as it is Unlocked, the grid will obey the frozen layer state and not be selectable.

    2. The permanent one: After you're satisfied you're grid is where it is, use Tools > Groups > Ungroup on it. It will no longer be a grouped entity and obey the layer rules.

Is that true for both CC3 and CC3+?

When this has happened to me in the past I move the grid to the grid LAYER. Then I'm able to freeze it. I have to make sure that the entire grid is selected so I usually hide all sheets except the grid sheet and then select everything on that sheet. I have seen this weird behavior in both CC3 and CC3+. It has usually happened when I create a grid by selecting points.
  • It was happening in CC3. I hadn't downloaded an update in, lets say, quite some time. The next day it started working. I suspect having actually quit the program and restarting the next day fixed it. Thanks for the suggestions.
